Exceptionally fine and rare “soy brown” bottle with beautiful iron oxide almost “oil plash” patina. The potter was emulating Northern Song Ding wares in the shape and glaze, but basically I would describe this piece as being a generic Cizhou type. Similar pieces in this specific glaze with a wide footrim, have been found at the Mutou Yinnzishang Site, Shakenzi, Nei Mongol (Inner Mongolia) Southeast of Chifeng bordering Liaoning province, and are dated to Liao (907 CE -1125 CE)- see refer ...click for details

Very rare and unique round spirits or medicine pottery flask. This round shaped traveling flask design has been around in ceramic form since the Western Zhou Dynasty, although it gives off an archaic impression, it is from the Yuan Dynasty at the latest, as the impressed chrysanthemum medallion has a Song aesthetic and the dark gray almost black pottery has the functionality of a nomadic people like the Mongols. All the other ceramic examples I have seen of this form have been glazed ...click for details

Exceedingly rare Liao Dynasty (967CE – 1125CE) peony shaped bowl stand with clear green tinted glaze. Liao ceramics are often problematic in identifying because of the often shifting and porous political boundaries in Northern China at the time as well as the fact that Han trade items were found in Liao tombs. Having said this, this piece is typically Liao in terms of the coarse high fired clay and light olive tone to the glaze. Very unique is the large size of this piece and rolled fo ...click for details

Exceptionally rare Tang bowl/cup with a wide everted mouthrim- the glaze is an off white creamy color, highly vitrified and quite thick for a Tang ware. This piece compares favorably with some of the Tang “xing” wares in He Li’s Chinese Ceramics New Standard Guide although there is some atypical broad cracalature near the mouthrim. There is one long crack, and two chips as well as major pitting on the unglazed foot, all may be noted in the enlargements. Even with the obvious damage thi ...click for details

Exceptionally rare Western Xia, 1038 CE - 1227 CE, (aka Tangut Empire), squat dark brown glazed ewer with incised floral scroll. This is quite an enigmatic piece, as the general glaze and decoration would indicate a Jin Dynasty origin, however the compressed shape, lack of lid and handle show a distinct departure from the Jin who followed Han orthodoxy in style and tastes in ceramics. Apart from the odd piece found in English language books on Chinese black ceramics there is not much in ...click for details

Good black glazed Cizhou type stoneware box. Lots of brown highlights with nice shiny glaze. Although the general shape has been around since the Tang Dynasty, most written materials on this sort of ware stop at the Yuan Dynasty, so I would put this piece as either Ming or Qing. Very pretty item in decent condition, there is a shallow glaze chip on the edge of the lip, noted in enlargements. H: 7.2cm/2.8in and D: 9.5cm

Very rare stoneware cizhou type bottle vase circa 12th CE. This was attributed to being from the Xixia Kingdom (1032-1227 CE) upon acquisition. The glaze is quite enigmatic, being a thick amber brown with greenish cream splashes, a cream glazed interior and dark brown glaze inside footrim. If not Xixia I would say this piece is most likely Jin Dynasty (1115-1234 CE). I will guarantee this piece to be no later than 13th century and from a Northern Kiln. There is one firing blister on the sh ...click for details

Extremely rare set of three Jin Dynasty grey stone saucers with clear glaze and overglazed abstract floral cream colored splashes. These are the only examples of this glaze and pattern I have yet to run across. The left saucer is in perfect original condition while the small saucer has a very small glaze chip on rim and the right bowl has some shallow chips on the rim which are noted in the last two enlargements. D: 15cm/5.9in an H: 4cm/1.5in, D: 11.2cm/4.4in.

Extremely rare Xixia Kingdom, 1038 CE -1227 CE, Cizhou jar with simple floral pattern. From a historical perspective the Tanguts who founded the Xixia Kingdom have always posed a bit of a mystery since their civilization was leveled to the ground by Genghis Khan for a series of perceived betrayals on their part towards the Mongols, who were particularly unforgiving about this sort of thing. This also accounts lack of artifacts from this group. There is one kiln flaw on the side where i ...click for details

Very rare pair of Liao or Jin Dynasty Cizhou cups with white slip covered with a clear glaze and dark brown glazed stands on light gray clay bodies. The cups and stands are fired and fused together. The left cup has one crack (noted in enlargements) and both have a couple very small glaze chips on the rims, otherwise excellent condition. These will both clean up quite nicely with a little soaking and washing. Stand diameter: 10cm/3.9in and height of cup and stand together: 7cm/2.8in. P ...click for details

Ban Chiang terra cotta bowl with red and white pigment and incised pattern on base. Condition: every piece of Ban Chiang ware I have observed has had quite a bit of restoration, having said this, this item has less the most. The stem of the bowl is new and has been cleverly constructed to reattach the base and bowl which are matched and of the period. Please note in the smaller photos where the repair is pointed out. Dimensions: 18.5cm/7.2in height and 21cm/8,2in at widest point.
