This scarab has four drill holes to permit sewing onto the bandages of a mummy, probably along with two wings of the same material. An alabaster trussed ibex. New Kingdom, 1570 - 1075 B.C. Large: 5 5/8 x 3". Provenance: USA ex New Orleans collection. The animal is in a prone position, ready for ritual, legs tightly bound, head looking back over its body. It is carved in relief on one side, with some losses to horns and ear. A nice example and quite large, with some good deposits and desert varnish.
