Old Chin skirt, circa 1950, from the Khumi subgroup in Burma. The design is called “amtosa” although deceptively simple is really extremely complex; please note in enlargements that the reverse side of this textile does not show any of the pattern on the front. This is made on a backstrap loom of very fine homespun cotton with a beaded open work border along the selvedge. Three small repaired holes. L: 1.8m/6ft and W: 40.5cm/16in.

Rare antique, circa late 19th CE- early 20th CE, three paneled silk embroidered diamond and meander pattern on cotton blanket from the Bouyi people of Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang. All materials are hand spun and woven. It is very uncommon to find a complete old tribal blanket from any of the Southwest China minorities these days. There is one small hole noted in enlargements where the panels are joined together and some threadbare lines, but the cotton warp and weft are well intact. O ...click for details

A fine pair of nitties, which are used to hold churning sticks in the process of making butter from Nepali hill minorities. Nice worn patina (especially in the hole) with that great smokey yak butter smell much beloved by aficionados of Himalayan antiques. Circa 60 to 90 years old, the one on the right appears to be older. No kitchen should be without these! The left one is H: 21cm/8.2in and the right one is H: 22.7cm/9in.

Pair of rare all rattan hand woven Rawang baskets from the Putao area of Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. Oldish, circa 50 years old in good condition (the small one has a missing loop), still pliable and not brittle. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Also it is interesting to note that the men do the weaving and with advent of plastic bags this pretty much a extinct craft. The sizes as follows; th ...click for details

Very fine ikat and embroidered patterned men’s sarong from Timor Island. The weaving is in three panels on this piece and is exceptionally fine and supple. In excellent condition with a few minor frays on the selvedge only. Although by no means an antique, this is a genuine “cultural” item and not made for the “tourist market”- a realistic dating would be between 30 and 50 years old. The embroidery (which is finished on both sides) and woven patterns on the two side borders panels ar ...click for details

Fine and old Burmese lacquer betel box with black, red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks on the lacquer surface and chipping along the edged rims, as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts. Outstanding Li women’s sarong. The Li people are found only on Hainan Island, China’s southern most province. Li textiles are much sought after because of their uniqueness in design and inventive weaving techniques. Please note that the blue and white pattern on this piece superficially resembles a “resist style” tie dyed ikat design, but in reality is woven into the fabric. This item is circa 50 years old. All materials and dyes are natural and hand made. The skirt consists of 5 separately wove ...click for details

Basket from Northern Burma (probably Chin or Kachin culture). Approximately 40 or 50 years old. Increasingly difficult to source, this is a fine example of Burmese Tribal basketry. Condition: good natural polished feel to the surface, a couple of “breaks” on upper rim of basket. The hole at the handle lid may be intentional, as it has the same wear as the rest of the basket. Dimensions: 20cm/8in height 15.5cm/6.2in diameter.

Used also as a baby carrier this is part of a Khami woman’s traditional dress called a “htip paum”. Of the many I examined I chose this and the other one listed for their unusual pictorial patterns. The Khami are linguistically related to the Chin but are low land rice farmers and live in the Delta region of the Kaladan River in western Burma. Please note that the pattern is hand embroidered on one side only and not woven in. This piece is aprox 30 years or older and is excellent condition. The ...click for details

Very old textile from the Li people from Hainan Island, China. This is a child’s vest and the anthro/zoomorphic cloth might have originally made from another clothing item and then the remnants were reworked into this child’s vest as it wore out. The entire pattern has been embroidered on a handspun and hand-woven cotton clothe with handspun silk thread. This is a genuine museum piece. The liner is made of a newer handspun and hand woven cotton cloth and has another lining of unknown cloth betwe ...click for details
