A charming Victorian sampler, 19th century done by Sarah Green and dated 1878. Beautiful stitches and the subject matter is very desirable, the condition is excellent.
This sampler is worked in brightly colored threads and there are a variety of stitches. it measures 16 1/2 by 17. It It is full of desirable subjects showing the alphabet, figures of birds, horses, houses, flowers. All the things the sampler collector looks for.
The verse reads: O God my father and my friend Ever thy blessings to me send Let me have virtue for my guide And wisdom always on my side. Samplers served many purposes in the 19th century. for a child they were a permanent reminder of stitches and patterns. for the young woman they were a means to demonstrate skills in the "gentle" art of needlework and to record family genealogy. For the mature woman they were a useful occupation and a way of creating gifts. Schools for young women prided themselves on the needlework skills they taught. I always think of the Henry James novel The Heiress, where the main character has few other accomplishments, and sits sewing while the man she has spurned pounds on the door. for the sampler collector this one is a treat.

A 19th Century Nailsea pipe with twist white threads design and a blue rim with a triple bulb stem. The pipe is 13" and perfect. Nailsea glass is characterized by swirls and loopings, usually on a clear ground. This glass was first made in Nailsea England in 1788-1883.
I love these whimsies, they were usually made during lunch or after regular work was done. The glassworkers would relax by spending time creating unusual glass objects, colorful canes, darners, hats, paperweights and pipes. Whimsies were usually given to family and friends, and they are highly collectable and sought after.

A very unusual piece of folk art, a basket made entirely of bottle caps. Swags and loops make this piece of folk art a very graceful piece of sculpture. Usually done by prisoners of war or itinerent artists this is a piece of unusual Americana. Probably dating C1900 or earlier it is an intricate design, and I can't think how many individual pieces are involved in its making. The basket is tall and from side to side. I had it filled with Victorian beaded flowers and the look was just dynamite.
