Black Lacquered Box with Dragon of Tortoise Shell and Mother-of-Pearl Inlay and brass hardware and brass wire with a silk-lined interior. This dragon that winds its way all around the box is exquisitely rendered and captures the loose and innocent quality of Korean dragons that art lovers adore in Korean paintings and ceramics, but does so in a medium that does not easily lend itself to such qualities, so this is really a finely accomplished work of art and a rare, museum quality piece. 12 x 12 x 7.5 inches, 30 x 30 x 19 cm.

Rare Choson Period Korean Scholar's Portable Ink Well and Brush (Mukho). See Horim Museum's site to see 3 similar mukhos. This one is very special, as it includes the original brush, and is exquisitely carved copper with traces of silver inlay. Please look at the close-up photos here of the key fret pattern (based on ancient pictographs of thunder) on the handle, the pullocho mythical longevity plant on the back of the well, and especially the creative Dragon in Pullocho-Shaped Clouds on the lid. This is a very beautifully designed and inventive implement that would have been important to and highly respected by the traveling scholar. The handle ingeniously acts as a tube for the brush. As seen in the last photo here (#6), it pairs very nicely with the rare Choson Period Inkstone with lid on our site (Stock # 0397) and makes a very nice addition to any collection of Asian scholar's items. Length: 7.25 inches, 18.5 cm.

Because it was believed that the rooster's morning cry drove away the night's evil spirits, an important talisman to ward off evil spirits was wood-carved roosters and chickens. They are a very important icon in traditional Korean folk art and in Korean tradition in general. The rooster’s comb symbolizes intelligence; traditional officials’ hats are based on the comb. The claws mean strength. The hen and rooster together mean fertility. The rooster was called the 'clock bird' and was sacred to Koreans. This polychromed wood set of four, two roosters and two hens, are really a rare and beautiful example of Korean Folk Art at its very best. They were used as funerary figures (kkoktu), with one on each of the four corners of the funeral bier. Traditionally, these figures would be burned after their use, but thankfully this set survived the pyre and what was intended to be an ephemeral existence. They were removed to the home and used as good luck and guardian figures to bless and protect the home. The Seoul Museum of Chicken Art, by the way, is a must-see for anyone traveling to Korea. Roosters: 17.5 x 9.5 inches, 44.5 x 24 cm; Hens: 14 x 7 inches, 35.5 x 18 cm.

Big Tadumidol Antique Laundry Pounder for Pressing Clothes with Pangmangis (mallets) included. Clothes would be placed on the log and covered with a sticky rice flour and water substance and beaten with the pair of mallets to remove wrinkles and give the clothes a lustrous sheen. These were a favorite wedding gift from the father of the bride to his daughter. It was felt that the activity of pounding laundry, with the soft, rhythmic sound of the sticks striking the wood dulled by the the layer of clothing, was entrancing and brought peace of mind to the wife. This gift was the father's way of saying that he wished peace of mind for his daughter in her new life. These have recently become popular as interesting seats, or benches for people who like to sit on or close to the floor. 31.5 x 8.75 x 5.25 inches, 80 x 22 13.5 cm. The mallets are 16 inches (40.5cm) long.

Set of Three Antique Nesting Sewing Boxes made entirely of hanji (Korean traditional paper) covered with applied cut-paper designs and finished with a light oil. Very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see the beautiful full page color photo of Brooklyn's piece on page page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). The Brooklyn box is only one box, whereas this box is three nesting boxes. The Korean Taeguk symbol adorns the lids and sides of each box. With one more section than the two-sectioned yin and yang symbol, the three-sectioned Korean Samtaeguk symbolizes Heaven (red), Earth (green) and Humankind (yellow), which combine and interlock to form the supreme ultimate unity of cosmological forces. A nice example of the old tradition of Korean Hanji (Paper) Art. Large Box: 18.25 x 12 x 5 inches, 46.5 x 30 x 12.5 cm; Medium Box: 16.5 x 10 x 4.5 inches, 42 x 25.5 11.5 cm; Small Box: 14.75 x 8.25 x 4 inches, 37.5 x 21 x 10 cm.
