Very fine old Cambodian red and black lacquered betel box constructed of wood with carved bamboo trim. Crack in the lid but no restoration (possibly the rim of the lid has been repainted as the color is a brighter red than the rest of the body). Any lacquer coming from Southeast Asia with no signs of use is a strong indicator that it’s new. Please view previous listings on my site of Cambodian lacquer for more insight and personal musings into this craft. Circa 50 to 60 years old. D: 22 ...click for details

Exceptionally fine and rare Khmer black lacquer “pillow box” with an abstract floral pattern. Definitely an old pre Khmer Rouge piece, dating 40 to 50 years old, possibly more. The unique decoration makes this a one of a kind piece, the construction is typically Cambodian in that it is constructed with thin small planks of wood and is coated with raw lacquer on the bottom, not to mention this was actually purchased several years ago in Cambodia, the attention to detail on the design is ...click for details

Finely made Cambodian red and black lacquered oval box, this is post Khmer Rouge i.e. made after 1979 and would probably best described as Arts and Crafts for the tourist market, usually sold as “antique’ after being artificially stressed. Unfortunately for the exception of textiles most traditional Khmer crafts have died out, as the availability of cheap plastic replacements from China and the average Cambodian citizen would not be able to afford items like this. There is nothing I ...click for details

Exceptionally fine and rare authentic, three piece, early 20th century Shan betel box. I hate to say it, but most Burmese lacquer being offered on the net these days purporting to be old are really new or over restored. This piece has the checkered za-yun pattern; according to Sylvia Fraser-Lu’s classic work “Burmese Lacquerware” this was inspired by European textiles exported to Burma during the 19th century. There are a few minor restorations, (some old, some new) as well as cracks o ...click for details

Fine old Burmese lacquer box with a sieve insert lid, this piece is most likely from the Shan State and was used as a food receptacle, as the small holes would keep the bugs out. Circa 30 to 50 years old, it is very thin and lightweight and the body is constructed of woven bamboo. Excellent original condition with minor lacquer loss at the bottom’s edge as to be expected from a genuinely old piece, unlike so many brand new or heavily restored Burmese lacquer pieces being offered as 1 ...click for details

Exceptionally fine old coconut scraper made of solid golden teak carved in the shape of a tiger. I purchased this on a recent trip to Northern Thailand, where the vendor said this was 200 years old and from Mandalay, Burma but I think 70 to 90 years old is a more reasonable dating, and might quite possibly be in the local Lanna style. This is one of the nicest examples I have seen in quite a few years. It is in all original condition, just as when it came out of the village. Usually these ...click for details

Very rare large Buddhist impressed votive plaque with the Buddha flanked by stupa images and Nagari script beneath him. This piece is from the Burmese Pagan kingdom, generally considered the classical era of Burmese Buddhist art and architecture, circa 11th CE – 12th CE. Please note reference is from Ancient Art of Burma White Lotus Press. Large chips on the side as may be easily seen. H: 16.5cm/6.7in and W: 11.5cm/4in.

Fine and rare circa early 20th century Yi minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan a few years ago. As the Yi and Bai are related ethnic groups it is possible that this is a Bai piece, but since there is really nothing I can find documenting Bai lacquer on leather making traditions I am assigning this to the Yi who do and also live in close proximity to the Bai. Excellent condition. H: 5cm/2in and D: 11cm/4.2in.

Rare and authentic antique Burmese Shan late 19th betel box. This piece is sold unapologetically “as is”, and would make an ideal “anatomical” study piece for anyone with a genuine interest in the art of Burmese lacquer making. Please note: I have put a single grain of rice (long grain) in some of the enlargements for perspective to appreciate the fine craftsmanship that went into making such a simple piece. The two halves fit into one another with same precision as a piston and cyl ...click for details

Fine and old Burmese lacquer betel box with black, red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks on the lacquer surface and chipping along the edged rims, as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts. Basket from Northern Burma (probably Chin or Kachin culture). Approximately 40 or 50 years old. Increasingly difficult to source, this is a fine example of Burmese Tribal basketry. Condition: good natural polished feel to the surface, a couple of “breaks” on upper rim of basket. The hole at the handle lid may be intentional, as it has the same wear as the rest of the basket. Dimensions: 20cm/8in height 15.5cm/6.2in diameter.
