Fine miniature pottery seed jar by Joseph Lonewolf, circa 1972. Sgrafitto carved, two tone fired clay pinch pot is 1" tall by 1 1/4" wide.Lonewolf is the originator of this style, both the sgrafitto carving and the two tone firing. Beginning back in the 1960s, Lonewolf encouraged his sister, Grace Medicine Flower and their father Camilio Sunflower Tafoya to leave the old traditional style of Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery behind. They became one of the most famous of all the pottery dynasties.
This little pot was originally part of a set of twelve "pottery jewels" meant to be collected as a group. Over time many of these tiny gems have become separated and are available individually.
Dynamic design of the Avanyu and the Sun cover the upper surface which is red and buff while the polished under half is black. Signed and dated.
