Made circa 1870 as a desk implement, to be rolled over blotting paper that absorbed excess liquid ink (when pen and ink were used). The ferns were printed on paper and glued to the painted wooden roller, then varnished. This example is in excellent condition with tiny signs of use. The rule measures 6-5/8 inches in length.

This little sewing implement is called an emery: steel needles and pins could be stuck into the velvet covered ends to be cleaned and sharpened. Made in Scotland circa 1870 the emery is in very good used condition with two tight splits on the tartan areas and minor losses to the velvet material. It measures 2-7/8 inches in circumference and 1-1/2 inches in length.

This small tartan egg is complete, with an interior spindle to hold threads and needles, including the cap for the needle chamber. It is in gently used condition, with minor scuffing and tartan loss and a small split in the chamber cap, which can be seen in the photos. Paper printed with the Sinclair tartan was carefully applied to form a blue six-pointed star at the broad end of the egg and a green six-pointed star at the pointed end. The piece was made in Scotland circa 1860 and measures 4-1/4 inches in circumference and 2-1/4 inches in length.

$190.00

This 6-3/4 inch tartan rule is in excellent condition except for missing its black label to identify the tartan - my best research picks Royal Stewart. It was made in Scotland in the last quarter of the 19th century (circa 1880), and its function would be to roll over blotted ink (rather than to measure); also it could be used to draw a short straight line. This is one solid piece of sycamore wood covered in the printed tartan paper.

The blunt edges and rounded tip suggest this would be more effective as a page turner rather than for opening letters - but page turners I've owned previously were larger. The fern fronds and ivy leaves printed on sycamore wood are clear and crisp. There is very light wear along the edges but otherwise the condition is excellent. Made in Scotland circa 1870 this piece measures 8-3/4 inches in length.

$115.00

A fine quality black lacquer mauchline ware lozenge shaped lidded box, measuring 5-1/8 by 3-7/8 inches and 2-3/8 inches high. The lid is decorated with an oval shaped bouquet of flowers, bordered by a wavy gold line. The box is lined with red moire paper that is accented with braid. Like most of these 19thc boxes part of the soft metal clasp has broken off but the box can be opened, as seen. Made in Scotland circa 1880 and influenced by Japanese lacquer ware that was available in Europe at that time, black lacquer mauchline is made of wood with a lacquer finish.

$90.00

A barrel shaped wooden bank with an applied printed paper motto: "THRIFT". The wording reads: "To catch dame Fortune's golden smile, Assiduous wait upon her, And gather gear by every wile, that's justified by honour." The bank was made in Scotland circa 1880 and measures about 3-1/4 inches tall and 2-3/4 inches in diameter. It was used, with noticeable wear around the upper rim and at the money slot. The blue morocco paper on the bottom also shows wear. It is a charming survivor of an earlier time.

The ring is in excellent condition, with no dings, chips or cracks, and measures about one-inch in height and 2 inches in diameter.

$120.00

Floral ware was one of the decorative motifs of Mauchline, although much less common. This pair was made in Scotland circa 1900, and are in excellent condition, with a few scrapes to the paper covering. The size is unusually narrow - about 3/8 inches in height - with the typical 2-inch diameter. Very pretty, with flowers in pink, orange, yellow, white and purple.
