Inlaid agates of Montrose gray, bloodstone, and jasper accent the colored stones, The entire composition is well executed by a superior lapidary. ...click for details

The snake in antique Scottish agate jewelry is perhaps the most coveted form. Symbolizing eternity, the serpent has been used though the centuries, dating back to the Egyptians. In 1839 Prince Albert presented Victoria with a serpent ring upon their betrothal and its popularity surged. The sentiment of eternal love with an entwined snake appeared on rings, lockets, brooches and earrings. The form of a snake, sinuous and graceful is very difficult to capture in stone. In this example, t ...click for details

This very special antique Scottish agate dirk is circa 1860. I have collected and appreciated the artistry of Scottish jewelry for over 30 years and when an item such as this appears it renews my passion. It was found oddly enough in a small shop in Paris, where I stopped in front of a window display over over 100 pieces of the finest antique tartan ware.
