This very beautiful brooch is Scottish, circa 1880. It is designed as a traditional brooch referred to as a Tara. The shape is an elongated circle set with three cairngorms at one end, and a deeper accent of color on the opposing side. The stones are mined in the Cairngorm mountains and have a beautiful, characteristic hue. Each is bezel set and surrounded by fine hand engraving. This form of Scottish brooch is among my favorite. It is called a penannular, or split ring. Used for centuries to secure garments, this brooch appears strikingly modern in its sleek, simple design.
