18th Century Sevres group Catalogue: Antiques: Decorative Art: Ceramics: French: Pre 1800   item# 948759 (stock# 1080)  click for details Atena +33(0)142617972 8100 USD / 5600 €  A Sèvres group of La Fee Urgele or Ce qui plait aux dames most likely modelled by Bachelier representing a lady seated on rockwork resisting the advances of a soldier standing over her, he is wearing armour and with a tied sash over his shoulder, on a mound base with an upturned basket of flowers at the front, a plumed helmet and shield moulded with Medusa's head to the back. This group was first produced in 1767 under the direction of Bachelier, and formed a pair with la Fête au château. The group sold for a price of 144 livres, and was based on characters from the comic opera La Fée Urgèle, which was performed in front of the court at Fontainebleau for the first time in 1765. According to Émile Bourgeois, the biscuit group represents Mme Favart et Clairval performing La scène du baiser volée. Very good condition. XVIII° Period, Circa: 1767. Dim: W: 7,9 in - D: 5,9in - H: 8,3in. / Un groupe en biscuit de Sèvres représentant une femme assise résistant aux avances d'un soldat en armure et ayant déposé son casque à aigrette. A l'arrière, le bouclier du soldat est figuré avec une tête de Méduse. Cette oeuvre est basée sur l'opéra-comique la Fée Urgèle ou Ce qui plaît aux dames, écrit par Favart d'après un conte de Molière. Cet opéra-comique est mis en musique par Edigio-Romualdo Duni. Selon Émile Bourgeois, ce biscuit représente Mme Favart et Clairval jouant la scène du baiser volé, dans laquelle la fée assise, repousse vainement sire Robert, qui tente de l'embrasser. La Fée Urgèle est représentée pour la première fois devant la cour, à Fontainebleau, le 26 octobre 1765. Le premier tirage de ce biscuit apparaît en 1767, sous la direction de Bachelier qui a succédé à Etienne Maurice Falconet. Epoque XVIII°, Circa: 1767 Dim: L:20cm, P:15cm, H:21cm. Next to her a little love is represented, also holding a wreath. This group represents l'Amant couronné created by Louis-Simon Boizot in 1784, when he was director of the sculpture workshop at the Sevres factory. This biscuit has been made in the 19th century probably by the Samson factory, it bears on the base a signature of Boizot. The biscuits made in Sevres in the 18th century came back into fashion in the second half of the 19th century, and were largely imitated by other factories until the 20th century. The Samson manufacture, founded in 1845, claimed his ability to imitate the rarest ceramics. The Samson was used to sell their pieces for the price of a reproduction. The letterhead of the manufacture clearly stated this aptitude by using words such as imitation and reconstitution of old masterpieces. They copied the pieces of the most amazing collections always with the approval of the owners. Besides, the Sevres factory sold them molded models made of plaster of its own collection. Other models exist on the theme of l'Amant couronné, and bear the clear mark of the Samson house. A copy, directly coming from the factory is kept with its plaster in the Georges Vigne collection. This model has also probably benefited from a molded models sold by Sevres because the plaster has exactly the same size as the biscuit. Very good condition. Napoléon III Period, Circa: 1870. Dim: W: 6,3 in - D: 6,3in - H: 7,9in. Sur une base circulaire, une jeune fille repose sur un épais coussin, tendant à son amant une couronne de fleurs. A côté d'elle figue un petit amour tenant également une couronne de fleurs. Ce groupe en biscuit représente l'Amant couronné. Ce biscuit a été réalisé au XIX° siècle probablement par la manufacture Samson, il porte sur sa base une signature de Boizot. Les biscuits fait à Sèvres au XVIII° siècle revinrent à la mode dans la seconde partie du XIX° siècle et furent beaucoup imités par différentes manufactures jusqu'au XX° siècle. La manufacture Samson, fondée en 1845, revendiquait son aptitude à imiter les céramiques les plus rares. Les Samson vendaient leurs pièces à des prix de reproduction et les mots imitations, reconstitution d'oeuvres anciennes étaient clairement mentionnés sur leur papier en-tête. Ils recopiaient les pièces des plus grandes collections avec l'approbation de leurs propriétaires, la manufacture de Sèvres leur venda d'ailleurs des surmoulés en plâtre de ses propres modèles. Il existe d'autres modèles sur le thème de l'Amant couronné qui porte distinctement la marque de la maison Samson. Un exemplaire, provenant directement de la manufacture, est conservé avec son plâtre dans la collection Georges Vigne. Ce modèle a d'ailleurs probablement bénéficié d'un surmoulé vendu par Sèvres car le plâtre a exactement la même taille que le biscuit . Epoque Napoléon III, Circa: 1870 Dim: L:16cm, P:16cm, H:20cm. Dans la mythologie grecque l'athlète Milo de Crotone, alors déjà âgé, se promenait seul dans une forêt en Italie, apercevant un chêne s'ouvrant en son milieu en de larges fentes, il voulut vérifier s'il lui restait de la force. Il entreprit de le déchirer et introduisit ses doigts, le chêne se rétracta et le fit prisonnier, puis Milo de Crotone se fit dévorer par des loups.
