Fine and rare old hand spun and woven cotton textile from Luang Prabang, Laos with indigo tiger and monkey motif and key fret side borders. Comparing the dyes (note the well toned silk threads in last enlargement) to other dated Vietnam War era pieces, I saw during a recent visit, I would put this piece to at least 60 years or older. Excellent condition and mounted on a contemporary handwoven cotton backing and border. L: 128cm/51in and H: 56cm/22in (mounted dimensions 88cm/35in x ...click for details

Eclectic ensemble of five poplar wood print blocks for cloth from Xinjiang Province. As the majority of people of Xinjiang are Muslim Uighur, Turkic speakers- the patterns reflect a Central Asian identity rather than Han. These would have been used by hand as evidenced by the well worn polished grips on the sides of some of the pieces. These are circa 19th century, a couple being possibly older, bordered by the Gobi Desert to the north with rest of the province encompassing the Tak ...click for details

Beautiful Miao woman’s apron with black calendered cotton cloth, and green commercial (possibly polyester) border, and fine silk embroidered center panel with hand woven silk embellished apron ties, from Guizhou. The colors in center panel are particularly luscious and I would date this piece 30 to 50 years of age. W: 40cm/15.8in and L: 43cm/17in.

Fine Vietnamese hand spun cotton with silk embroidery, skirt from the Tai Daeng ethnic group of north central Vietnam. Circa 40 to 60 years old in good condition except for a couple of patches on the hem. Lovely old traditional Bhutanese woman’s dress circa 50 years plus. This is a very refined weave with all the narrow stripes being made of silk and the wider bands of having a cotton warp and inner “sechu”silk embellished pattern which gives it a three dimensional feel. The colors are very soft and pastel and most likely natural. One side of the selvedge has some minor fraying which is where it probably dragged the ground and got the most wear as well as few pinholes. The inside of t ...click for details

Absolutely fabulous ( I would only say this if I don’t care if it sells and am happy to keep it for my own collection ) old and rare Angami Naga, three paneled shawl with anthropomorphic cowry shell design, woven by the Meitei of the Manipur State of India and used as a trade/tribute cloth to the Nagas. The exact reason of why these blankets are given to the Naga is a bit obscure. One source says that they are given by a Meitei Raja to a Naga chief for services rendered but as to what ...click for details

Rare three paneled men’s wrap from the Nung/Rawang ethnic group of the Kachin State, Burma. The weaving technique and materials are quite unique which I have not encountered with any other ethnic group. The base warp and weft foundation is made from hemp fiber, the pile is made from cotton, and the finished maroon colored ends are finished in wool. All the fibers on this piece are handspun with the exception of the bright colored yarn which are “store bought” synthetics. The Rawang are ...click for details

Fine and rare Iban shaman’s pua circa 19th century. This miniature pua was used by Sarawak indigenous healers. It is colored with all natural dyes and the thick warp thread suggests that this was woven from native jungle cotton. Acquired on a recent trip to Sarawak, this only small pua a I saw out of well over a 100 pieces I examined. Aside from a couple of "pin holes", this textile is in perfect condition. L: 120cm/47.5in and W: 52cm/18.5cm.

Rare antique, circa late 19th CE- early 20th CE, three paneled silk embroidered diamond and meander pattern on cotton blanket from the Bouyi people of Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang. All materials are hand spun and woven. It is very uncommon to find a complete old tribal blanket from any of the Southwest China minorities these days. There is one small hole noted in enlargements where the panels are joined together and some threadbare lines, but the cotton warp and weft are well intact. O ...click for details
