A refreshing IMARI BOWL from Japan with two cracks which have been repaired which is somewhat visible. The central motif is a potted flowering bonsai plant, with three cartouches of a goose inside an enclosure with bamboo and other trees. One goose or perhaps a fat duck is upended downwards in the water. These same cartouches are repeated 3 times on the outside of this childlike bowl. This beautifully executed small porcelain dish was made as a presentation piece for a temple in Japan. It shows a Bodhisattvas meditating under a pine tree. In addition to blue and white, there is green and a lacquer red color as well. The foliated rim is in a dark brown wash. There is also a spurious Chinese six character reign for Wan Li (Ming Dynasty) 1573-1619. All this within a single blue circle (not double as in Chinese ceramics.) Taisho era, circa 1920-1939. Japanese porcelain bowl with bird and iris center surrounded by a cloud border. The exterior in a bamboo and flower design. Because of this bowl's age (pre 1868) the blue is from cobalt and not an artifical dye. Condition is not perfect. The glaze is in good condition but there is a stapled repair to a hairline crack. Circa Late Edo era, 1800-1868. Diameter=10".

Large (12 inches in height) KUTANI Japanese VASE with three cartouches, one with two kingfishers by a river and flowers, another a temple by the sea with mountains, and the last of fish underwater. The neck is decorated with phoenix birds and Buddhist symbols of scrolls. There is a Kutani mark on the bottom (see enlargement #4) Condition: some loss of decoration (color) on the neck and surrounding the cartouches. No cracks or chips or hairlines.

Two Japanese ARITA porcelain "Suisaka" style flower VASES with a rich underglaze colbalt blue. One is slightly larger than the other, though the shape and glaze are the same. Condition of one is excellent, no chips, cracks or fritting.The second has some "potting flaws," around the lip. Height is about 6 inches. Circa: Edo era, 17th - 18th C. An Avalokitesvara, Japanese KANNON BOSATSU, standing erect with contemplative face, lotus blossom and leaves in her right hand, flowing robes,standing barefoot on lotus leaf base. Beautifully modeled, color is a slightly bluish-cream off white. Condition: one small chip in the back of the robe (about the size of half a little fingernail) which is not noticeable from the front and side. Circa 1880-1910. Height = 15.5 inches.
