These Japanese IMARI matching baluster vases, circa 1890's are in absolutely perfect condition.
Purchased @ Christie's in Amsterdam,(see Lot #120, Pg. 38, "Asian Ceramics and Works of Art," 8 May 2001.) Decorated with 4 shaped panels enclosing alternately a garden scene with song birds, and two dragons contesting the flaming pearl amidst clouds and foliage, enclosed by washed-blue bands below a dense foliate ground ro to the shoulder and the slightly flaring rim. Japanese Blue & White porcelain dish portrays a typical Buddhist theme in Japan, a Master Monk, (wise and dignified) followed by the apprentice (young & bit stupid) in a pastoral scene with willow trees, bridges, water, mountains, clouds and the sun. Foliated edge with a floral design around the edge of the dish complete this elegant, early Meiji era (1864-1880)dish. Two Japanese ARITA porcelain "Suisaka" style flower VASES with a rich underglaze colbalt blue.
One is slightly larger than the other, though the shape and glaze are the same. Condition of one is excellent, no chips, cracks or fritting.The second has some "potting flaws," around the lip. Height is about 6 inches. Circa: Edo era, 17th - 18th C. See Christie's, London, Sale # 5968, November 4, 2009, Lot # 264 for similar ceramic "flask."
