Very Rare Ancient Byzantine Oil lamp with Greek Lettering "Light of The Mother of God" This term was widely used by the Byzantines for The Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. Reference: Light and Life, Ancient Christian Oil lamps of the Holy Land, Studium Biblicum Franciscanum Museum, Jerusalem 2001. These lamps where used widely in Christian homes during the period of the fifth and sixth centuries AD (Byzantine Influence). The lamp in the form of a small clay bowl in which oil was burned, was the most common form of domestic lighting from the very earliest of times. As olive oil was plentiful in Palestine, this form of fuel was normally used in these lamps. The wick was usually made of flax. Whilst the shapes of lamps vary from simple bowls to very ornate clay and bronze artworks, this lamp is a quite simple yet exquisite design. Clay lamps are amongst the most prolific pottery vessels found in the archaeological remains. This lamp with its characteristic stylised 8 branch Menora is typical of the oil lamps of the period, the rarity of this particular antiquity is related to the text embossed on the sides, in place of the common palm leaves. Size: 100mm x 67 x 33

BRONZE OIL LAMP, HELLENISTIC PERIOD 332 – 63 BC. Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalms 119:105). A lamp such as this might have lit homes during the flower of the Classical age. A metaphor of joy and prosperity, for hope, for life itself, lamps have illuminated the path of civilization for centuries. They have guided great thoughts through the night, stood vigil with lonely passions. In the presence of this simple object, we are in touch directly with a vanished world, with the people once warmed by its glow. Today it remains as an enduring symbol of man’s desire to conquer the darkness
Found: In Judea - The Holy Land.
Condition: Choice and very rare, as found - unrestored, lid missing. Dimensions: Length 105 mm, Width 45 mm, Height 25 mm

Choice and Very Rare solid bronze Christian Byzantine oil lamp from the 6th century A.D. 122mm (long) x 42mm (wide) x 80mm (high)
This is a lovely specimen, found near Jerusalem in the Holy Land. It appears that the lid and handle where damaged in the process of removing the lamp from it's resting place. The restoration is very professional and does not detract from either the value or the beauty of this superb piece. The lamp appears to be based on a Hellenistic style with a large Crucifix and an interesting "clam shell" lid.

This lovely classic Herodian oil lamp is simple and elegant. This is the defining "style" of the period dominated by King Herod "The Great" and his offspring. It has been spun on a potters wheel with the spout added by hand (the artisans hand marks are quite clear). It is a classic design of the Herodian Period (up to 100 AD) and would have, most probably, been in use about the time of the crucifixion of Christ By King Herod.
It is a beautiful example of the ancient artisans work of lamp manufacture.
The obvious signs of hand made ancient pottery add to the beauty of this unique piece. Size: 90mm x 60mm x 25mm Weight: 59.7 g
