$1450

This is an exquisite large, signed bamboo basket made in Japan in the early-mid 20th century. It is done in the Japanese style (i.e., not Chinese style). The artisan, Chiku-yuu-sai, began at the bottom with a simple one-over, one-under weave. To make the sides of the basket, he gathered and tied several strips of bamboo into large open knots. These wrap around to form the body of the basket. At first appearing irregular, there is nothing random in the way Chikuyuusai constructed this basket. The ...click for details

This antique Japanese bamboo basket is made with a rare stripe bamboo, adding a special dimension. It is skillfully woven with 3 different types of bamboo--tiger-stripe, a light-colored thin bamboo with soft grain (low-growing sasa?), and another light-colored bamboo that's been stained brown (grainy, thicker, split bamboo). After being split, the edges of the bamboo have been smoothed over prior to weaving. After the basket was completed, it was rubbed all-over with a brown stain, then wipe ...click for details

This is an antique Japanese bamboo basket, called a "morikago"--used to hold various fruits or for flower arrangement, and displayed for tea ceremony. It was made by Sashitsu (reading of characters might be different). The body of the basket is perfectly round. It is very light, yet it has a sturdy, solid look. The handle is made of two pieces of round-shaped pieces (not strips) of bamboo that have been gently twisted together. ...click for details

This bamboo basket is made with a special small species of bamboo that has a natural stripe pattern on its surface. The bamboo was split to take full advantage of this natural pattern. After it is harvested and as the bamboo strips mature, the stripes become more prominent.

This is a large Japanese bamboo basket made with diagonally woven thick and thin strips of split bamboo. It began as a rectangle on the bottom, but the edges (and corners) are all rounded. The sides gradually taper inward, giving the basket a soft, pillowy profile. It is finished with a round (ovoid shaped) rim. The handles are done with two strips of bamboo that are joined and intertwined with thinner strips of bamboo. No nails nor wires used at all--100% bamboo throughout. This four-legged basket is made of intricately woven pieces of split bamboo. The rough, asymmetrical shape of the handle is wonderfully juxtaposed against the basket's refined body. It has a warm reddish patina. In excellent condition. One of the thin strips of bamboo around the handle is coming loose, but the handle is attached with nails. So, the integrity of the basket is not compromised.

This elegant, Japanese bamboo basket was made with 2 layers, each woven separately and then joined together. The inner layer was woven with pieces of split bamboo in a 1 over, 1 under, 1 over "plain weave" structure. The outer layer is made of overlapping slats of bamboo, arranged vertically, and held together along the foot and rim. The inner layer was constructed first, then the outer layer was built up around it. The basket actually has 2 rims (see pics)--1 for the inner and 1 for t ...click for details

This bamboo basket, for ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), was made with alternating wide and narrow pieces of split bamboo which were diagonally woven into a tapered cylindrical shape. The rim is done in a lacy eyelet fashion--visually quite striking. The basket has 3 legs, but only 1 extends out from the bottom of the basket. This tilts the basket slightly forward to enhance the viewing of an arrangement.

This is a wonderfully handcrafted Japanese bamboo basket dating from the early to mid-20th century. It has a short bamboo insert (natural color) for water and flowers. This is a fantastic, twisted gourd-shaped basket, made of intricately woven strips of bamboo (2 types). Strips of yellow-black striped bamboo are used decoratively, while a reddish-brown stained bamboo is used for the basket frame. The basket comfortably rests in a frame made of old gnarly tree roots (from the camellia bush?). This style of basket was popular in the Meiji and early Taisho periods (1900s-20s). It was made to be used for Japanese flower arrangement (ikebana). ...click for details
