SOLD 

A set of mid - later Ching dynasty renditions of the Four Heavenly Kings. Depicted in Buddhist temples as protectors, each is associated with one of the cardinal directions. They also play a similar role in the Taoist tradition.
Probably circa late 18th century. One indicator of this is the use of a large iron nail to attach one of them to its original location (see pictures). ...click for details

This is a wonderfully carved large bust of Buddha, with the reddish gilding associated with early Ching works and remnants of a later application of gold leaf. Some damage at the base of the neck, and some loss of the lacquer to the carved wood hair. Approximately 11.5 x 6 x 6 inches, 29 x 15 x 15 cm.

This large thangka, featuring the Medecine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) as its central image, flanked on either side by monks also holding medicine bowls. Beneath is a dragon and water, with five primary chorten (stupas) above.

This large statue of the Buddha, made of lacquered teak with remnants of gold leaf, incorporates a crown, jata (spire), and other elements of style typical of 17th and 18th century Jambupati images (for a classic example of the crown, google Mahamuni Buddha, a 14th century bronze of great historical importance, redecorated in the late 1700s).

This interesting version of the Reclining Buddha combines the more decorative features of the Mandalay style (glass inset decorative motif at the filet bordering the hair, the treatment of the hair, ornate and glass inset robing borders) with a distinctly Shan face of a style dating to the late Ava. Circa late 19th, early 20th century. Normal wear. Approximately 38 inches x 14.5 inches x 7 inches (96.5 cm. x 37 cm. x 18 cm.)

A beautiful set to add to a garden path or entryway, this pair were originally used as a decorative embellishment to the entryway of an important residence or official building. To the rear of the decorative aspect is a flat area, one of which still has the iron connector inset into it. Each one is approximately 56cm. high by 58 cm. long by 20 cm. wide (22" x22.5" x8")

A true piece of Chinese history, this marble was probably the base or other structural element to a monument or temple in its time. Probably dating to the Yuan Dynasty or a little earlier, the scars of the Cultural Revolution make precise dating not possible. None the less, a wonderful piece, with a Buddha in relief on three sides, and the remainder of some carving to what is now the back. Approximately 21.5x12.5x12.5 inches, 54.5x32x32 centimeters

One of the finer exterior architectural panels I have found, this 19th century or earlier elm relief carving has wonderfully detailed carvings that have been aged nicely in the raising of the grain typical of exposure to the elements. Approximately 9.5x36 inches, 24x91.5 centimeters.

A wonderful example of pre classic Cham sculpture, this feminine garuda figure is carved in high relief in sandstone. the conical, linear treatment of the hair is one of the indicators of the period, as is the simpler aspect of the sculpture. A difficult subject to shoot indoors, I have included pictures taken in sunlight.
Approximately 14x15.75x5 inches, 35.5x40x12.5 centimeters.

Carved stone head of a Cham deity, possibly Avalokitshevra. Though worn, one can clearly see in this well carved stone sculpture the features typically associated with Cham sculpture of the period, including the facial characteristics as well as the vertically linear depiction of the hair and the high topknot. Also to be noted is what appears to be a figure of Amitabha at the base of the topknot. This placement of the Amitabha is frequently associated with sculpture depicting Avalokiteshvra. ...click for details

Sold 

One of the most famous statues of the Buddha in S.E. Asia, the Mahamuni Buddha was cast in bronze and is supposed to be and actual portrait of Buddha made after his (historically inaccurate) visit to the kingdom of Arakan. This pair of doors, featuring protective ogres at the top and Nats standing atop lions(gaurdian spirits) below, would have been used as a side or possibly primary entryway to a Buddhist monastery. Dating to the early 20th century, they would have been protected from the worst of the elements by an overhang of some kind, and would have been strapped to a seperate element to turn. This bowl, dating to the beginning of the 20th century, is a wonderful example of the Burmese schwezawa technique of gold leaf decoration. Featuring the animals of the Burmese zodiac as well as Nats (gaurdian spirits somewhat analagous to a combination of saint and fairy) as the central motif, with geometric and floral themes. A very large 19th century dry lacquer Buddha with gold leaf. In good condition, it has a minor crack to the left rear, just behind the lower arm, and the hair has been redone sometime in the last 50 years. It is very uncommon to find one at this size, particularly with such a pleasing aspect and in such wonderful condition. Approximately 61" (70" with finial)x38"x26"
