$9500.00

Wonderful Grandfather Storyteller by Helen Cordero, the original artist of the Storyteller form. Helen Cordero, Cochiti Pueblo Indian, b.1915-d.1994, created the first storyteller pottery figure in the late 1950s. She was the inspiration for generations of potters in her Pueblo and all the others. Rising to prominence in the 1970s, her large Grandfather storyteller was featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in the 1980s. No pottery collection is complete without one of Helen's "people".

This classic male seated figure is 10" tall. Five children are seated on his knees. What is unusual is there are two girls and three boys, a special order for a mother with five kids. Helen usually made boys, not so many girls. The children are beautifully dressed in their best clothes, as is the singing Grandfather with his dressy cape and fancy shirt.

Although this was a masterpiece of fine workmanship by Helen, it has some issues with condition. There is a large crack under his right leg which has been stabilized and the smallest boy has a damaged foot. This is all original to the making of the piece and the owner took delivery even though it was not perfect! It has been loved all these years by the family. May be professionally restored or left as is. Priced according to its condition.

Buyer pays $40.00 for shipping and insurance.

Retail price $9500.00.
