Originally written in 529 AD, the Codex Justinianus was a compliation of all extant Roman imperial law that had been written prior to the rule of the Emperor Justinian. Compiled at a time when the rift between Rome and Byzantium had become virtually complete, this collection contained much of the civic law that had been written under Hadrian and Theodosian centuries earlier.
