This large basket, made of bent wood with red lacquer and cast iron fittings, seperates into four compartments. The interior is covered in lacquered cloth, a technique more common to older pieces, so it may be a bit earlier. It measures approximately 38.75x34.25x17.75 inches (98.5x87x45 cm.)

The use of matching grains to the doors and panels of this broad cabinet help add to the effect induced by the use of the pale Chinese walnut. Subtle traces of red lacquer to the front, probably added after its original manufacture, today enhance the grain it originally would have obscured. The sides and top still have a primarily intact coat (pictures coming soon), with the sides also having simple paintings of bamboo. Original hardware. Approximately 56x69x24.5 inches, 142x175x63 centimete ...click for details

$1300

Probably late Ming Dynasty, this small chest, of Mongolian origin, was apparently intended for use as a strong box to be strapped to a horse. The exterior features dragons, chilin, and floral motifs in a combination of polychrome and gesso. Interestingly, this chest was in turn made from an older piece, as the interior features fragments of art, similarly done to the exterior, with the exception of a small figural theme done strictly in paint. ...click for details

This set is a little difficult to move around by oneself, hence the appearance of only two of the panels. Though it has a color similar to older Cypress pieces, it lacks the depth, and is probably due in part to the fact that they may have originally been used as doors, and would have been exposed more. Elm is used in some of the carved components, but the vast majority is Bai mu/Cypress. Circa mid/late 19th century. Normal wear (actually, less). Ill add shots of the other panels soon, but ...click for details

The clean, simple lines of Ming furniture, reminiscent of our own Mission style in some ways, was and is much emulated. While I hesitate to say that this table is actually Ming, the warm orange tones of the cypress used to make most of this 'country' table are a hallmark of age. Probably circa 18th/early 19th century. Normal wear, protective coat of shellac added to top surface before waxing. Approximately 34”x37.75”x37.75”

Made of wood with clothe, paint and gesso, this cabinet features the Kalachakra symbol as it's central motif. Surrounding this, dragons dominate at both the top decorative 'ridge' (which is removeable) as well as at the top side doors. In the panels below, one also finds a dragon, which has panels of the phoenix on either side. Toward the base are lion dogs. A variety of other stylistic elements are present as well, from the colorful lotus petals painted at the top to the double ...click for details

This 19th century chest features a handpainted lion on cloth which has been lacquered to the front. Though numerous repairs are evident, the artwork appears to be primarily original, as does the hardware. Most repairs to the paint appear to have been done where it is black only. The front hasp and the ring-hinges on the rear have both been moved, showing the more obvious repairs to this piece (see close ups) both in the hardware and in the paint.
