Archaic (Shang) White Jade Bird Dragon Carving

Archaic (Shang) White Jade Bird Dragon Carving
 click for details

Ancient Eyes

$450.00

This unusual stylized white jade carving of a bird with a dragons head measures 2 1/2 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches wide by about 1 1/2 inches in depth.

It is carved from a very white nephrite and has small brown inclusions on a few areas on it's head. It also has a very dark brown oxidized area around the bottom of the carving. It gives the impression that it's base has been sitting in something for a very long time: so long that it has oxidized and leached deep into the stone itself.

This unusual little white jade carving is difficult to categorize. It may be Shang, or a copy of Shang in style.

We are dating this jade carving to the 18th - 19th century, but it may be much older. It has additional wing details that are chiseled or incised into the back portion of the wings: these details do not show up in the photos.

The buyer will not be disappointed as it looks much better in person than the photos would indicate (in both detail and depth of color).

Enamelled Silver Pilgrim Flask with Elephant Motif

Catalogue: Popular Collectibles: Cultural: Chinese: Snuff Bottles: Pre 1960   item# 876416

Enamelled Silver Pilgrim Flask with Elephant Motif

Ancient Eyes

$450.00

This sterling silver lidded flask or snuff bottle is covered overall (except the standing base) with intricately detailed designs and pictures outlined in silver. It has a removable screw top also covered with colorful designs over silver.

It measures 4.0 inches tall by 2.25 inches in width by about 1.2 inches in depth (100mm x 55mm x 25mm).

It has two oval fields, each with an elephant shaking a tree, most likely attempting to dislodge a tasty meal. The cylindrical edges are covered with colorful leaf and flower patterns set against a black background.

It is in excellent condition with the exception of one tiny missing square of lavendar enamel out of about 120 similar squares that form one of two rings that separate the designs. The missing enamel is about the size of a pencil point and not really worth mentioning (but we always do). There is another ring of royal blue rectangles adjacent to the lavendar one (with no losses).

It is marked .925 on the bottom of the base. (.925 being the abbreviated mark for sterling silver.)

It weighs 96.3 grams or 3.1 troy oz.

We originally assumed that this was East Indian in origin because of it's designs, but we have had suggestions that it may be Persian or even Chinese, so we will leave such speculations to the next buyer.

We will, of course adjust the listing to reflect further documented information, as it arises.

Ancient Eyes

$495.00

This unusual jade carving of a griffin with a bull's head and a snake in it's mouth measures 6 1/2 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide by about 2 1/2 inches in depth. It has colors that range from pale celadon green to pale blue grey in addition to a covering of off white calcification over much of it's surface. it also has an outstanding natural cloud pattern that is evident in pictures of it's backside or wings. It is in outstanding condition except for the loss of a very small tip of one of it's ears (see photo). We are dating this old jade to the 19th century although it may actually be much older. We prefer to be conservative when it comes to dating jade (Our buyers don't seem to mind.) It's wings are engraved with feather marks and it has well delineated claws on all four extremities. This is a truly interesting carving that is difficult to categorize. The buyer will not be disappointed as it look much better in person than the photos in both detail and depth of color.

19th Century Political Cartoon: Uncle Sam & W.J. Bryant

19th Century Political Cartoon: Uncle Sam & W.J. Bryant
 click for details

Ancient Eyes

$495.00

This original pen and ink drawing is a political cartoon from the 19th century.

It shows Uncle Sam and William Jennings Bryan talking. The Title of the cartoon " Sound, Nothing but Sound", is written in pencil at the top.

It is in "as found " condition which means it needs restoration. This original drawing needs a careful cleaning that includes a bleach bath by a professional restorer to remove a large area of staining. It has the frame it was found in, but it is in shabby condition and has a non acid free wooden back (part of the cause of the staining). The buyer will also receive the old frame if he or she chooses.

It is signed by Grant Wallace lower left under Uncle Sam's foot.

Grant Wallace was born in Hopkins, Missouri in 1868. In 1889 he took classes at the Art Students League in New York City. Around 1892 he moved to San Francisco and worked as an artist and reporter for the Examiner, an editorial and feature writer for the Chronicle and a war correspondent for the Evening Bulletin in Japan and China. Later he entered politics, wrote short stories and screen plays, and lectured on occultism.

William Jennings Bryan ran for the presidency three times as the Democratic Party candidate -- in 1896, 1900 and 1908 -- and lost all three times.

In 1896 Bryan was able to persuade the Democrats that paper currency, money, did not need to be "backed" by gold. Bryan wanted the United States to use silver to back the dollar at a value that would inflate the prices farmers received for their crops, easing their debt burden. This position was known as the Free Silver Movement. At the Democratic National Convention in 1896, Bryan not only persuaded his party that he was right, he also secured the Democrats' nomination for the presidency with his skills as a speaker. Bryan's opponent, Republican William McKinley, beat Bryan at his own game. His campaign raised far more money than Bryan's did and he was able to persuade voters that dropping the "gold standard" would lead to inflation, rising prices for goods and services. McKinley convinced the people that the Free Silver Movement was a bad idea. As a result, McKinley won the election.

William Jennings Bryan also found notoriety later on in life with his involvement with the Scopes Monkey Trial and the argument against teaching evolution in the schools.
