A huanghuali wood brush washer carved in the form of a frog resting on a lotus pad that gently curls around him, giving protection. Brush washers and brushpots were important implements for painting and calligraphy for Chinese scholars. They were used, not only for practical purposes, but also for enjoying their beauty.
A huanghuali wood brush pot carved with flowering trees and lingzhi fungus. The trees/foliage are encased in three large panels resembling petals. The interior of the rim (down about 1.5 cm) is also carved into three sections made to resemble tops of petals. There are many what are called "ghost faces" present in the grain - a characteristic of huanghuali. The carving might be from a later date.
