Unusual bamboo flower basket from the Tohoku region of northern Japan. The age is early Taisho Period c.1915. The weave is a wonderful 'yotsume-ami' or same length warp and weft with a rich patina. The rim is a 'makibuchi' weave with superb technique. But what makes this basket so alluring are the wide bamboo iserts on the base. Made from 'susdake' or smoked farmhouse bamboo, the entire basket is a work of art and in excellent condition. $680 (h:42cm x w:22cm)

This bold wagumi style Japanese bamboo flower basket epitomizes the free-wheeling styles prevelent at the turn of the century as compared to the rather stoic, finely woven Chinese influenced styles in the late 1800's. This is a very unusual shape for a bamboo flower basket and indicates Kokosai was of a new creative generation of bamboo basket makes in the early Taisho Period c.1920 in Tokyo experimenting with bamboo flower baskets as art. He was reported to be influenced by Chikubosai. The styles are quite similar. Smoked bamboo or susudake was used. Excellent condition. c.1920. (9" x 7") (23cm x 18cm). This is an ultimate example of the Japanese flower basket for use in the art of Ikebana and Tea. A rich patina and the essence of wabi-sabi. The basket is unsigned in the Japanese 'wagumi' style but it offers us a top class masterpiece. The bamboo has been aged and leeched and then woven using a fine plait and with intertwined bamboo swirling around the length of the basket. Absolutely great condition. c.1920. A spectacular basket by one of the acclaimed masters, Iwao Kounsai from Kyushu and mentioned in 'Bamboo Masterworks: Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection'. The basket is signed by Kounsai and has a fabulous array of elaborate knots and wrappings, including 'mushi -maki' knots and 'cho-musubi' butterfly knots on the handle. Iwao Kounsai was born in Oita, Kyushu 1901 and died 1992. He achieved Nyusen status in the 1934 and 1935 Kogeiten Expos. Excellent condition. c.1934. (13" x 11") (33cm x 28cm). This vintage Japanese bamboo flower basket is signed by one of the true masters of the art, Buseki Suishin. He was born in 1888 and died in 1983. At age 12 he studied under the 'god' of the Japanese basket golden age, Iizuka Hosai I. Established his own studio later on in Tokyo where he won numerous prizes including at the 1922 Ministry of Commerce Expo and prizes in 1934 and 1936. He is featured in "Bamboo Masterworks : Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection. Slight break on one of the bottom legs but unseen unless you look underneath. c.1935. In the original signed box, this Chikubosai II bamboo flower basket is the ultimate wabisabi aesthetic both Chikubosai and his father and mentor Chikubosai I always strove for. Simple elegance at its best. Maeda Chikubosai II was born 1917 and died recently in 2003. He is featured in the book 'Bamboo Masterworks:Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection' p. 181. In 1995 he was named a Living National Treasure for the bamboo crafts. His baskets have a contemporary feel in the use of thin round bamboo stips to create geometrical designs. c.1960. Some of the best rattan wrappings, knots and stiches we have ever seen on an antique Japanese basket. The handle is held in place by buttresses made of bamboo wrapped with 'mushi-maki' knots and the seven 'cho-musubi' butterfly knots on the handle are exquisite. Verticle bamboo inserts on the body are elaborately decorated by 'insect stich knots (mushi-kagari). Handle is bamboo. Rim is a series of fine rattan knots. c.1900. (21" x 10") (54cm x 26cm). Stunning richly patinaed antique Japanese bamboo flower basket from the turn of the century c.1900. This 'wagumi' Japanese style basketry is the epitome of the new free wheeling style that emerged at the end of the Meiji Period c.1868-1912. Using aged susdake bamboo taken from old farmhouse ceilings, this unsigned basket maker has created a texured weave with a beautiful aesthetic sense. A magnificent piece. Rich patina tea ceremony bamboo flower basket from early 1900's. Beautiful 'susdake' smoked bamboo has been used from old Japanese farmhouses, split and woven into a piece of art. This particular basket feature a diagonal insertion technique with wide strips being inserted between plaited weaves. A 'tomobuchi' rim is employed with upward curling strips to create the rim.
