Uchikake once was Heian and Edo noble lady's public costume(approximately 14~18century), but as Uchikake was so bulky and hot in summer time, ladies started wearing Kosode instead(similar to Furisode). Even then, beautiful Uchikake didn't lose its standing, as peasant and other people with higher status started wearing Uchikake as wedding costume...as they still do now.
