This woman's kimono has a kasuri tie-dyed design of squares and circles. It is made of a nubby handspun, natural/plant-dyed raw silk (tsumugi); done in the Murayama Oshima tsumugi style. The sleeves are elegantly long (25.5 inches!). The lining is made of an undyed, nubby handspun silk (upper) and a crepe silk (lower) that was recycled from a tomesode kimono--the black ground dye and colored yuzen-dyed areas have been bleached, leaving a pinkish color. This woman's kimono has a kasuri tie-dyed design of crossed arrow feathers (yabane). It is made of a nubby handspun, natural/plant-dyed silk; done in the Murayama Oshima tsumugi style. The sleeves are elegantly long (26 inches!). The lining is made of cotton (upper) and silk (lower).

This is a man's formal (5-crested) silk kimono jacket (haori), made of high-quality satin silk (habutae). It has a spectacular image of Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine, Ise, which is set in a book-shaped cartouche. The image of Ise, set on the shrine compound, is finely brocade woven with silk and metallic threads. This is a charming young boy's silk padded kimono--the type worn everyday in the early 20th century. It has a kasuri tie-dyed, vertical stripe pattern (warp ikat) in soft indigo blue, brown, and undyed white. Made of a smooth tsumugi raw silk fabric and dyed with plants/natural materials. The blue was likely obtained from plant indigo, while the brown could have been obtained from a variety of plant materials. This man's kimono jacket (haori) has on its lining a handpainted ink wash (sumi-e) painting of Hotei, characteristically depicted as a pot-bellied, eccentric, Zen monk dressed in a tattered robe. Hotei is believed to be the historical 6th-century Chinese itinerant monk, Pu Tai Ho Shang. In Japan, Hotei is revered as a Zen patron saint--in spite of having neither property, home, or family, he is always cheerful and helps others wherever he goes. This is a lovely Japanese kimono obi (Nagoya-style) with a roundel design done via the rice paste-resist stenciling technique (katazome). It is made of a thick, nubby, handspun silk fabric--first dyed a soft beige-yellow, then the design was stencil-dyed over this. The multi-colored dyes (vermillion red, violet purple, ocher yellow-gold, and indigo blue--were applied by hand in a style that recalls Okinawan stencil-dyeing; a second color--for shading--was applied to some of the roundels. This kimono is made of a special type of silk called "kihachijo" --the "ki" means yellow, and hachijo (-jima) refers to the island in which this specialized silk fabric is made. Hachijo-jima is a small island 290 kilometers from Tokyo, out in the Pacific (part of Izu island chain). For approx. 800 years, the residents of this island have been producing silk (since the Heian period!).

This is a very special, formal, antique Japanese kimono made for a young girl. It was made of a fine satin silk, and dyed a wonderful periwinkle blue ground color (the same blue as that used for Edo kosode; obtained from a natural dye). The butterfly and phoenix design (w/a tatewaku opposing line motif) was done with the rice paste resist yuzen technique, executed in a somewhat folk-art like manner (as in tsutsugaki rice past resist). This Japanese kimono haori is made of a brocade-woven design that was done with polychrome lacquered threads (called "rama-ire") and metallic couched gold and silver threads. This style of haori was especially popular in the 1950s-60s; here is an extraordinary example. It has one crest, indicating that it was worn for semi-formal occasions.

This is a 1920s-30s Japanese kimono made of a stiff crepe-like silk (omeshi?). It has a wonderful Western-inspired "modern" design of daffodils and a Japanese-inspired design of fans. A wonderful example of a fashionable, casual, pre-war kimono, the type worn by urban-dwelling young women of the Taisho era. This is a very special formal tomesode kimono decorated with various famous views of Kyoto, all beautifully handpainted in the rice-paste resist "yuzen" technique. Depicted is the Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizu-dera, Toji Temple's four-storey pagoda, Higashiyama, etc.--all iconic sites from Japan's cultural capital.
