Frequently referred to as a "Buddhist Bible", or "Palm Leaf Manuscript", books such as these are actually closer to being rules of ceremony, and are made from lacquered cloth (frequently monks robes) with gold leaf. These Burmese books, known as Kammawa-sa, contain nine elements from an original Pali text, and are written in a stylized form of Burmese known as tamarind seed for the thick, squared form of the script. One of the most famous statues of the Buddha in S.E. Asia, the Mahamuni Buddha was cast in bronze and is supposed to be and actual portrait of Buddha made after his (historically inaccurate) visit to the kingdom of Arakan. This bowl, dating to the beginning of the 20th century, is a wonderful example of the Burmese schwezawa technique of gold leaf decoration. Featuring the animals of the Burmese zodiac as well as Nats (gaurdian spirits somewhat analagous to a combination of saint and fairy) as the central motif, with geometric and floral themes. Approximately 31cm. in diameter, 16 cm. high each, not including stands. This pair of lacquered wood food vessels each feature a dragon and pheonix motif on the top with a variety of daoist and scholar symbols on the sides. The wear and Patination of time and use gives a warm glow to the artwork on this pair, though it also makes them a little difficult to photograph. As with all of our pieces, feel free to ask for more photos. Some natural wear, Circa 1850

Approximately 42 cm. high, 41cm. in diameter, each This pair of pyi-daung are a fabulous example ofthe Yun technique of incised lacquerware. Meant to be strung on bamboo poles to carry rice to the monastary. The motif of the incised decoration is that of Let-taik let-kya, and involves characters and themes from the Burmese version of the Ramayana.
