Elegant pottery vase hand crafted by Maricopa Indian artist Mary Juan has the classic elongated neck and globular body for which the Maricopa are known. But nobody did it better than Mary Juan. She was also one of the few to make a handle in the Grecian style.
Perfectly shaped vessel is highly burnished red slip and painted with mesquite sap in Mary's signature design. Pit fired. Signed. Dating from the 1950s, this pottery gem is in wonderful original condition, no chips or cracks. One minor fleck of missing slip as pictured.

Charming effigy pot with two faces made by the Maricopa Indians of Arizona. Made in the style of the Mojave effigy pottery, we can tell by the slipped clay and red iron oxide paint that this is Maricopa. In the 1960s, an Indian art Dealer urged some Maricopa potters to make effigy pots like those of Annie Fields and Elmer Gates. Since the Maricopa were originally over on the Colorado River, they felt comfortable with that idea. We have seen effigies by Mabel Sunn, Vesta Bread, Barbara Johnson, Therolina Bread and Warren Oliver. My best guess is Barbara Johnson.
This unsigned piece has painted tattoos and beaded jewelry.
Stands 7 1/2" tall by 5 1/4" across the spouts. Excellent condition, circa 1960s. Buyer pays $20.00 for shipping and insurance.
