Ancient Eyes

$450.00

This unusual stylized white jade carving of a bird with a dragons head measures 2 1/2 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches wide by about 1 1/2 inches in depth.

It is carved from a very white nephrite and has small brown inclusions on a few areas on it's head. It also has a very dark brown oxidized area around the bottom of the carving. It gives the impression that it's base has been sitting in something for a very long time: so long that it has oxidized and leached deep into the stone itself.

This unusual little white jade carving is difficult to categorize. It may be Shang, or a copy of Shang in style.

We are dating this jade carving to the 18th - 19th century, but it may be much older. It has additional wing details that are chiseled or incised into the back portion of the wings: these details do not show up in the photos.

The buyer will not be disappointed as it looks much better in person than the photos would indicate (in both detail and depth of color).

$495.00

This unusual jade carving of a griffin with a bull's head and a snake in it's mouth measures 6 1/2 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide by about 2 1/2 inches in depth. It has colors that range from pale celadon green to pale blue grey in addition to a covering of off white calcification over much of it's surface. it also has an outstanding natural cloud pattern that is evident in pictures of it's backside or wings. It is in outstanding condition except for the loss of a very small tip of one of it's ears (see photo). We are dating this old jade to the 19th century although it may actually be much older. We prefer to be conservative when it comes to dating jade (Our buyers don't seem to mind.) It's wings are engraved with feather marks and it has well delineated claws on all four extremities. This is a truly interesting carving that is difficult to categorize. The buyer will not be disappointed as it look much better in person than the photos in both detail and depth of color.

Archaic Jade Shang Style Robed Figure with "Horns"

Archaic Jade Shang Style Robed Figure with "Horns"

Ancient Eyes

$695.00

This standing nephrite jade carving of a bearded and robed figure with long horns or donkey ears measures about 10 1/2 inches tall by 3 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches in depth.

It is carved from a large piece of nephrite ranging from pale to deep green with a strip of oxidized white to yellow jade down the middle. In addition, there is a crackled stripe of oxidation running straight down through the center of the face, spreading down through the figure to the bottom of the robe.

There are also engraved rectangular patterns and additional patterns on the robe.

Although the serious possibility exists that this is a very old nephrite carving dating to the Shang period, we are dating this one to about circa 1900-1920 just to be on the safe side.

It is interesting to note, however, that the oxidation and subsequent crackling of the stone that runs right down through the face is something that probably occurred after the jade was carved. The question arises: if this is only a copy made in the last 100 years or so, why didn't they turn it around before they carved the face, as the center of the back side is pristine where the face could have been positioned, no crackling or deterioration? It would have been the better choice to use as the front and would have made a more attractive and therefore, more saleable copy. If however, the deterioration of the stone actually happened over an extended period of time after it was carved, that would make more sense as an explanation as to why the current positioning of the stone in relation to it's natural flaws or irregularities.

Archaic Carved Jade Figural Totem

Archaic Carved Jade Figural Totem

Ancient Eyes

$750.00

This outstanding antique nephrite jade carving measures 2 1/2 inches (68 mm) by 1 1/2 inches (33 mm) by 3/4 inch (20 mm).

It has colors that range from pale celadon green through blue / gray green with areas of brown suffusions (oxidation) on the top of the head and the back of the neck.

Although we are listing this as a Song Dynasty to Ming Dynasty carving in the style of the hardstone carvings of Neolithic or Pre Dynastic China, it actually may be much earlier than that. If it turns out to be an earlier jade carving (Neolithic to Shang), it's value can be adjusted upwards by a great deal.

This totemic figure is a combination of a dragon's head and the body of a cicada or grasshopper.

The buyer will be extremely pleased. The photos do not do it justice. This is a lovely, soft, tactile jade carving and may well have been either a fondling piece or worn for a very long time.

$900.00

The Mogul emperors (1526-1857)were patrons and connoisseurs of the arts. The Rajput maharajas, who spent time at the Moghul court after their subjugation, were influenced by the wealth they saw and commissioned additional decorative arts for their courts, The courts of the Moguls had workshops attached to them called karkhanas. The most skilled craftsmen were employed there and they were mostly local workers. Craftsmen were valued so highly that when Timor massacred the inhabitants of Delhi in 1398, he spared the Indian craftsmen and recruited large numbers into his service. The local artisans employed in the karkhanas were either converts to Islam or were former slaves. Moghul-trained Muslim artists also entered into the service of the Rajput courts. The number of foreign craftsmen who came to India was fairly small. Many of the foreigners who were employed in the royal workshops were highly skilled craftsmen who usually acted as the guide and teacher of their local counterparts. The materials from which objects were made as well as the level of sophistication and ornamentation were important indicators of the wealth and standing of those who commissioned them. Thus, objects made of jade and gold were usually produced for the Moghul court. Imperial items were also generally more ornate and spectacular than those made for the other Indian courts. The finest articles produced by the royal workshops were usually given away as gifts or were used for ceremonial purposes.
