Exceptionally rare Oiran Geisha geta shoes. Depicted in many Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Oiran, or queen of the geishas, this is the geta she wore in the entertainment district of Kyoto, Gion. The high style in black lacquered wood with tatami mat inlay in the velvet on top. The straps are also of velvet. On the back is a torn sticker that reads geisha. On the inside of one of the wood rungs is the name of the shop that sold the shoe, 'Kyoto Shibata Footwear' , the address 'Kyoto Gion Machi' and the telephone no. 3159. Full length maru obi woven at the turn of the century c.1900 in kyoto's nishijin kimono district. The blue green shades indicate an upper class obi. Wonderful cranes frolic among chrysanthemums. Both sides have the design woven on a jacquard loom which was introduced to kyoto in the late 1800's. Blue-green maru obi's becoming increasingly rare. Shipping/insurance to usa/western europe $50.
