An English Georgian wine glass dating to C1765. The ogee bowl with slightly slanted flute moulding to the lower part; over a double series opaque twist stem comprising a pair of five ply spiral bands around an inner lace twist. A delicate and well worked stem. A broad conical foot with rough pontil. Lead glass and in great original condition. Height: 5 11/16” Rim: 2 1/16” Foot: 2 7/8” A good glass.

The flat twisted stems with white zanfirico and aventurine decoration finished with pincered detail to the edges. Basal supports to the stems before conical feet with small rough pontils. A mixed twist wine glass dating to C1770. A bell bowl with solid base engraved with a sprigged swags design with bows at the peaks and fruiting vine within the troughs. The mixed twist stem comprising an opaque white thread around a spiral air rope. Mounted on a conical foot with rough pontil. Lead glass and in perfect condition. Height: Just over 6 ½” Rim: Just over 2 ½” Foot: Just over 2 7/8” Mixed twists; thought more affordable than colour twists in the current market, are a rarer stem form.

Prior to the current fine product we enjoy today; sugar was a course sweetener that was dispensed in solid ‘cones’. Sugar nippers were used to nip a portion of sugar from the cone and when sugar was used to sweeten a beverage such as a toddy, the sugar was immersed in the liquid in the bowl of a glass and a sugar crusher such as this would be used to crush the course material much in the same way that a pestle and mortar might be used, held by the flattened end.
