A large size ancestor portrait. Painting on canvas. Shanxi province, second half 19th century. The relatively bright colors and the full background with curtains are typical for the period. Portrayed are six generations, three of them dressed in Ming style clothes and three in Qing style. The eldest ancestor on top must have been an important person judging his hat and rank badge. The moment rendered in this portrait lays roughly around 1750 if we count three generations from the start of the Qi ...click for details

An ancestor painting on canvas, Shanxi province, 19th century. The canvas consists of three vertical strips that are joined.
In general the canvas is in a good condition. There are however some spots in the upper part that show damage and repaired holes as can be seen in the pictures. Judging the colours of the figures, they have been refreshed recently. This is seen often and should in many cases -where the touch ups are older- be regarded as a refreshing for ritual use. Dim.: WxH 130x220cm.

Depicted are three generations two of which -the older ones at the top- are dressed in Ming style clothes. The youngest generation at the lower end shows more recent touch ups to the clothes as well as to the chairs and the tile floor. These are not to be regarded as restorations but as maintenance. Portrait of a woman. Painting on paper, late 19th century, paneled and remounted on a scroll. Although not visible on the pictures, both scroll ends are there. The region is unknown. This painting has been treated roughly judging the many folds in the new mounting. The painting itself also sustained some folds but to a lesser degree. Along the right side from the top down there is an old tear that is visible as a repainted line in the red of the chair-cover where the tear stops. At breast-hight ...click for details

A 19th century ancestor painting from Shanxi province, painted on canvas. It is unmounted so the buyer will have to put rods at the lower and upper end him or herself. Dim.: WxH 125x205cm. Condition: the canvas consists of three vertical strips put together with additional short pieces added at the top. This piecing together is seen often, probably as a way to save costs. Please study the pictures carefully as there are conditional problems. There is loss of material along almost the whole leng ...click for details

Painting of a dignitary in an imperial yellow robe flanked by two servants holding tea and a lantern.
The background is formed by an altar table with spirit tablets, a screen decorated with landscapes and figures and a draped curtain.
The use of the color yellow in clothing was the exclusive right of the emperor and his family and could further only be used with his permission.
The kind of yellow robes as in this portrait were often a gift of the emperor to a man of merits as is the case ...click for details
