This Middle Eastern miniature painting depicts a surreal hunting scene on the banks of a river, where two large green creatures are surfacing. Two men kneeling on the riverbank appear poised to release small arrows toward the huge heads of the fish. Five more men along the river banks are either chasing or hunting small, deer-like animals. Both the central scene and wide border are brightened by the liberal use of gold leaf, a characteristic of Persian works. Strange implements are held by t ...click for details

This Yao painting of tribal ancestor spirits originally was part of a set of 27 scrolls that comprised a full Yao (Mien) Bible. (See photos and descriptions of a complete set archived on our website www.silkroad1.com by entering 57-33 in the search box.) This painting is one of two “orphan” bible pages we found that most likely were replaced in a bible with similar new paintings, which is sometimes done to refresh the set. Bible paintings that are replaced are “decommissioned” by a Yao priest ...click for details

The orchid and bamboo, classic Chinese brush paintings, were prized by Chinese scholars who positioned the paintings prominently in their studios because, they said, the nature of the orchid and bamboo closely mimicked laudable human virtues. Orchids represented love, beauty and refinement, and bamboo stood for longevity and durability. They were among the four plants the literati identified as “Noble Paragons.” (Also included were the chrysanthemum and plum blossoms.) These two paintings are on ...click for details

A mid-19th century Indian miniature painting from Rajasthan depicts Sawai Man Singh, who was Maharajah of Jaipur more than 200 years ago. The strong influence of Mughal style is evident in the exquisite detail of the gold designs on the sword, floral patterns on the shoes, scarf and hem of the robe and in the pose of the subject in profile. Tiny gold designs cover the gold robe, and fine gold lines radiate from a green nimbus. The rich colors are enhanced by a narrow black border with delicate g ...click for details

The gentle face of a Buddhist monk from Burma is painted on a large leaf from a Bodhi tree. The Bodhi leaf, with its distinctive shape, is an important element of Buddhist iconography in Southeast Asia as Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi (also called Bo) tree. In this painting, the monk’s expressive face appears to be looking through the leaf, adding an almost magical aura. The leaf rests on black cloth, and the work is unsigned. Painted in the late 2 ...click for details

An embroidered silk cloud collar made for a child in late 19th century China has seven silk lappets, each embroidered with a lamb. In both city and provincial households, embroidery, an ancient Chinese art form, used symbolic animals, birds and flowers in free designs to express hopes for the future of family members. The lambs on this charming Shaanxi Province collar symbolized filial piety, an important Confucian trait that was encouraged on this piece seven times over. Called cloud collars, s ...click for details

A Tibetan thangka celebrates the revered Buddhist teacher Padmasambhava, a monk who, in the eighth century, traveled from his native India to Tibet. The scholar is recognized for smoothing the adoption of Buddhism within Tibet by integrating some of the deities and beliefs of Tibet’s ancient Bon religion into Tibetan Buddhism. On the back of this thangka (sometimes spelled “thanka”) is the Tibetan script for the mantra “om mani padme hum.” The mantra, which is said to contain all the teachings o ...click for details

A very large silk yonhwado painting by Korean painter Hang San is a serene and soft scene of three waterfowl nestled among large lotus leaves. Traditional Korean lotus paintings, called yonhwado, were displayed in Korean homes during summer months on the open wood verandah or on the walls of the gentlemen's quarters. This late Choson early 20th century painting owes its calm to the placement and muted tones of the green leaves and a few rings of blue water on the fine silk. The scene include ...click for details

A miniature painting of an Ottoman gentleman is signed by Riza-Zade, a Persian artist who was brought to serve in the Ottoman court in the early 19th century. Although the work is richly adorned with gold and touches of vivid red, the subject's reflective expression and loose green robe give the painting a quiet, subdued feeling. Judging by a small area of minor damage to back surface of the paper, the painting most likely was preserved in a book. It is in excellent condition, and signed in ...click for details

Charcoal on paper is transformed into rippling water reflecting huge ceramic jars in this work signed by Vietnamese artist "My." The jars, though they dwarf both boat and man, serve somehow to draw the viewer into these smaller elements, creating an intimate portrait of the white-beaded grandfather poling his vessel up the river. This Danang artist specializes in capturing with charcoal such moments in the lives of her country's elder citizens. (See a similar work by this artist in ...click for details

In vibrant shades of blue on a black background, this painting by Chinese folk artist Luo Zhi Jiang has a sophisticated, dream-like quality that seems worlds away from the painter’s rural home base in Huxian County, Shaanxi Province. Luo Zhi Jiang is one of the few Chinese so-called “peasant painters” to establish a reputation abroad. We first met the artist at the Huxian Painting Community in the early 1990s and were struck by his vision and talent. Since then he has had solo shows in London a ...click for details
