The large central shield-shaped tableau depicts a woman laying a wreath over two doves on a tomb. Around the perimeter are three smaller similar scenes: one of a woman laying a vine on a tomb, one of a woman laying a wreath on a flaming heart on a tomb, and one very unusual scene similar to the latter – except that the woman (and the entire scene) is black. Gorgeous Georgian mourning miniature picture executed in hair featuring a tomb surmounted by two flaming hearts (one in blond, one in brown hair) and a grieving dog, with his paw raised to the tomb. The dog is loyalty; the flaming hearts are love. The bird with a wreath symbolizes the soul and the bond with the decease; the urn signifies sorrow. It’s a lovely scene, probably once set in a frame. Some losses to the tree, the bird and the plaque on the tomb. Measures 2 15/16” in diameter.
