$5500 USD

This is an exemplary piece of Middle Kingdom Egyptian religious symbolism. This terracotta scene has two purposes - first, it’s a butcher's shop scene depicting a sectioned bull. The severed bull’s head effigy is visible in the top-left quadrant of the tray, the severed hind quarter of the bull located in the bottom-left, with legs and other parts represented on the remaining quarters of the tray. There is a fluted drain in a cross pattern impressed in the surface of the tray to allow drainage of the offered blood from the offering to flow to and through the spout.

Sturdily constructed of red Nile silt clay and painted with a red slip paint on the sides and top. This piece was actually used in the Middle Kingdom (circa 2000 BCE) as an offering table. There are cut marks and gouging from a sharp metal instrument in the slip and the fabric of the clay located in a number of areas, plainly visible.

The condition of the piece is fantastic! Not broken or repaired whatsoever. There is some abrasion to the underside of the spout, as seen in the pictures, and a couple of small chips around the rim, with some overall loss of the red slip by abrasion from utilitarian usage in ancient times, but this really is a VERY special, rare and MOST collectable piece.

Sir William Flinders-Petrie, noted Egyptologist, referred to this object typology as a "Soul House" or residence for the soul after death, with all of its essential, utilitarian and votive aspects.

This object measures a SUBSTANTIAL 13.5" in length and 12" in width. Great Provenance, which will be provided to the purchaser.

However, there is some abrading to the rim, and one side, below the pierced lug handle has erupted, but the eruption is calcified and completely stable. A wonderful piece which has been beautifully preserved in it's as-found condition.

Pieces of pottery from the pre-dynastic periods of Egypt's long and colourful history are very rare indeed. This is a wonderful and affordable example worthy of any collection.
