It portrays a magnificent temple at To-Ji, Japan for the followers of the branch of Buddhism called Shingon-shū. This is a print of what appears to be a scene from a Kabuki play – I base that on the fact that the palanquin bearer has his eyes crossed in the classic pose (mei) used in Kabuki (for an explanation of “mei” see the ending paragraph). This is one of the most popular prints from the the one-hundred woodblock prints made by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) for his "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon collection." Here we offer a black and white Japanese woodblock print with two different subjects. On the left we have a picture of a large wandering priest who wears a basket shaped straw hat on his head. Hashiguchi Goyo (1881-1921) was one to the foremost Japanese print makers of the early 20th century. The print depicts a bijen-ga applying wearing a light summer kimono known as a yukata.
