Theorem painting was popular among the women of the time, using a series of stencils to paint a design – usually floral -- on white velvet. This purse has it all, from its unusual boat shape to its vibrant colored flowers to its neat green silk ribbon bows. Very good condition; white velvet has yellowed and there are a few stains; ribbons are slightly worn. There is wear to the silk stitched throughout the purse, but it remains a beautiful piece. Silk lining is dirty. Pushpin closure is a little bent. Measures 8” by 7 1/2”. The exact purse can be seen in Richard Holiner’s 1996 guide, Antique Purses, on page 107. Beautiful embossed frame; interesting link chain. Very good condition; crack to glass of timepiece, a few dropped links under one shoulder. I have not tested the clock.
