Unusual and very rare REVERSE PAINTING ON MIRRORED GLASS, circa late 18th early 19th century, Chinese Export, of a delightful young Chinese child playing with a cricket. The painting, done on mirrored glass is an exceptional find not only in age and quality, but subject matter. Children were very rarely depicted in these period paintings, as the market was made to appeal to merchants and sailors visiting China on long journeys.
The subject, a young boy with bound pigtails is richly dressed, charming and winsome. The soft colors of the portrait are pleasing to the eye. Perfect to blend with most decorating schemes.
The original beaded wooden frame is hand chamfered and in good condition, measuring 12.5 " x 16.5 "
The painting was purchased from a prominent old estate in California.
Condition: Very good. Wear to silvering on mirror, appropriate to period.
Measurements: 12.5 x 16.5 Inches, framed
