Ancient carved white limestone / marble rectangular slab-type stele carved in relief on face, with a Thrachian rearing horse and rider, Rome, ca. 100 to 350 A.D. Rider wears conical helmet, pleated knee length skirt and cape, and holds a sword in his raised hand. Scene is contained within a simple temple setting. Tall, elegant vessel on wide ring base with rounded body, relief circumbscribed rings at shoulder, and tall slender neck leading to expanded mouth with spout. A tall looping handle of conjoined rods connects from mouth to side of body with foliate detail, tip of detail nicked. Beautiful reddish patina. 10-1/2" H. Almost all owl cups, or skyphoi, one encounters today were manufactured in Apulia - southeastern Italy, around 325 BC. This extremely fine example is an exception. Made in Athens (Attica) during the last quarter of the 5th century BC (Ca 425 to 400 BC), it is far more delicate, far better potted with thin walls, delicate handles and small foot.
