Wonderfully catching Okamoto Kiyohiko Taisho Period C.1910 landscape painting on silk. Okamoto 's real name was Soyama Suekichi b.1869 - d.1921. He was one of the leading landscape painters in the era. This lovely painting has a fascinating depth up through a ravine into a small village with the background mountains in mist. Quintessential japanese landscape at its best. We had it in our house and never tired of looking at it or enjoying the serene repose it afforded. Excellent condition. Total height: 194cm; width 55cm. Very rare Daruma scroll from Futo Sanjin better known as Kanokogi Takeshiro, (1874-1941). He was mainly a western style - painter, studied in France before returning to Kyoto to establish his own school. In his later years was a juror for the esteemed Bunten and Teiten Art expositions. This painting is all the more remarkable because this was a rare stab at the classic zenga ink paintings. This Daruma is a classic in itself. C.1920. Ask for shipping quote.

Fabulous Ono Chikkyo b.1889-1979 egret on branch under whispering willow branches. Chikkyo studied under Takeuchi Seiho, one of the most important and famous Japanese painters in Kyoto before WWII. His "Shima Nisaku" painting received the Bunten gold medal in 1916 and after that his career took off. There is the Chikkyo Art Museum in Okayama, south of Kyoto and the retrospective " Ono Chikkyo - 120 Years After His Birth" was recently held in March , 2010. Painting H:133cm x W:31.2cm. Wonderful Meiji Period C.1909 painting of a white egret standing on bamboo by the acclaimed master Hishida Shunso (1874-1911). One of Okakura Tenshin's puils, he played a major role in the Meiji era innovation of Nihonga. His real name was Hishida Miyoji and he was also know for his numerous paintings of cats. He was commissioned by the Tokyo National Museum and in 1898 he joined Okakura Tenshin in establishing the Nihon Bijutsuin. In 1903-1905 he traveled extensively overseas holding exhibitions in The United States and Europe. He was awarded the Order Of Culture. Excellent condition. Looks to have been remounted. Condition of the painting is very good. The upper left f the scroll has a few chips on the edge and slight water mark. the bottom right where the scroll attaches to the roller has been repaired. Exceptional Yoshitora original woodblock scroll dated feb. 1866. Yoshitora's real name was Tatsugoro Nagashima and he was a pupil of Kuniyoshi. This woodblock scroll with vivid detail and color is of an 'oiran' the queen of the Geishas. This style of woodblock scroll is called 'Takenaga Hosho' indicating the long length of the woodblock and in this field the narrow width is called 'habahiro hashira-e' (pillar style). The woodblock is 71cm x 23cm, the entire scroll is 147cm x 37cm. Shipping/insurance to usa/western europe $50.
