This is a very lovely pouring cup with a short spout on one side - presumably used in the tea ceremony. The glaze is a very lovely dark chocolate brown with many blue overtones - it shimmers as you turn it. The piece measures 5" diameter and is 3 1/4" high. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1885-1910. It is in excellent condition. There is what appears to be some kind of potters mark on the unglazed foot - however, we have not been able to get it translated.

This is an early and simple Vietnamese low bowl with a pale tannish celadon glaze with a crackle finish. The top and the bottom of the bowl are glazed, but the interior of the footed rim has some glaze drips but is primarily unglazed natural clay. The glaze tended to run unevenly in some areas, making for an unusual pattern. It has an interesting rim that is wider than one would expect and has a dip surrounding it. This is a 20th century set of Kutani ware for serving sake – consisting of two tokkuri (sake bottles), one octagonal bowl with lovely floral design and five matched sake cups also with floral designs. The bowl was probably used to hold snacks such as a pile of edamame - a preparation of baby soybeans in the pod commonly found in Japan, China and Korea. A traditional custom of the Japanese is the belief that odd numbers can bring lucky so that sake cups come in a set of five. All of the items are ...click for details

A lovely little tulip shaped pottery cup with a lemon yellow crackle glaze. We are not positive whether this cup is Chinese or Japanese - however that shade of yellow has tipped us towards Chinese in origin and to the late Qing dynasty in age - circa 1875-1910. It could possibly be quite a bit older.
