This lovely studio pot, titled "Gosu Tsutsugaki Mon Henko" was made by Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966) around 1940. Kawai Kanjiro is one of the founding fathers of Japan's mingei movement, and one of its most famous potters. This pot has been authenticated (in letter) by Kanjiro's great-grandson, Kawai Toshitaka (son of Kawai Koha, granddaughter) and by Arakawa Yoko (chief curator, Kawai Kanjiro House Museum, Kyoto). ...click for details

This is a fabulous, large Japanese porcelain cobalt blue and white flower vase (hana-ike) done in the shape of a gourd. It was made at one of the Kiyomizu kilns in Kyoto, Japan. This style of blue and white porcelain--sometimes with a bit of iron oxide (red) overglaze accents here and there--is called "shonzui," taken from the name of the person attributed to having started this particular tradition in Japan in the 16th century. This is a very charming contemporary Japanese porcelain plate, made as a decorative item for display. It was made in one of the Kutani kilns, as indicated by the inscription on the box (read below). It has a matt brown glaze on the top surface, with nine white circles--eight smaller circles around one larger circle in the middle. This is a lovely, large, slightly vintage Japanese pot, made of a high kaolin content stoneware (white clay body). It has a thick creamy underglaze, on top of which is a colored glaze which was applied randomly in sections (around the entire pot) and allowed to drip. When fired, these glaze sections developed varying colors, from an iron/rust brown, to indigo blue, to celadon green. They have a transluscent look. Very wonderful. ...click for details

This is a lovely flower vase with a plum blossom design. It was made in one of Japan's Shino ceramic kilns. Shino stoneware, made for many centuries and still made today, is produced in small villages scattered high in the mountainous region of Mino. The Shino ceramic tradition began some time in the 1500s.

This is an antique Japanese porcelain plate with a hanabishi (flower-lozenge)shape and a scalloped-rim. It has the characteristic green/black “fuku” stamp (on the bottom), which was used at the Kutani kilns in the 18th and 19th centuries. This large, cylindrical-shaped, green celadon porcelain vase has a raised design and is characteristic of those made in one of the Imari kilns in the early 20th century. It has a design of plum blossoms (raised) painted onto the celadon ground with a thick white glaze. The plum tree trunk and branches (not raised) are done in a rich cobalt blue glaze. Very finely made, with good "ring" when tapped.
