This delightful little house and garden tableau contains an incredibly detailed miniature Japanese tea house surrounded by a twig fence adjoined at the corner by a bamboo garden gate. Early to mid-20th century. The house has movable sliding shoji screen doors and windows and a large removable overhanging hipped roof. This fine heavy wooden pothook or kettle-hook hanger (“jizai-gake”), hand carved from a large block of densely-grained zelkova (keyaki) wood, was once suspended by a heavy rope from the high roof beams of a Japanese home or shop. This unusual tea tray has been realistically hand carved from a single piece of wood in the form of a curled lotus leaf. Meiji/Taisho period (early 20th century). The front depicts the top of an open lotus leaf with curled outer edges, including the upper and lower edges which are completely folded over the top. Cast using the lost-wax method, this unusual low relief ornamental Japanese iron teapot (“tetsubin”) has a unique design in Chinese scholar taste (“bungin”). Meiji period (1868-1912). This exceptionally fine ornamental tetsubin (cast iron kettle) in squat form is decorated in Komai style with extensive gold and silver hira-zogan and nunome-zogan inlays. Meiji period, 19th century. This wonderfully textured 19th century Japanese cast iron tea kettle, made by noted Kyoto-school tetsubin craftsman Kibundo (1812-1892), is cast in high relief with the figures of lions and writhing dragons. This fine kettle bears the body-mark “Kibundo zo” cast beneath one of the handle mounts and a remnant of the square seal mark of Kibundo on the bottom.
