A horse frolics under a stylized pine bough on this unusually shaped mountain-scape tokkuri dating from the 19th century. Color has infused beautifully into the crackled pale glaze, and agano green surmounts the peak. It is 3 x 3-1/2 x 7 inches (8 x 9 x 19 cm) and is in fine condition.

A very rare Edo period Ao-Bizen (Blue Bizen) Koro in the shape of Hotei leaning against his bag, the sack forming the basin of the incense burner. What a tremendous expression! A label inside the ancient Jindai-sugi age blackened cedar box reads Bizen-yaki Hotei Go-Koro, Nishi-no-Maru yori and is followed by the date Tenpo 5 (1835) fifth month and signed Chitsuryo (?) The fact it was stored in the Nishi-no-Maru would indicate it was part of a castle or great palace inventory. It is 7-1/2 x 4 ...click for details
