This platter is about 14" d. and is an example of Viktor Schreckengost's artwork, shortly after he ceased working as a designer for Cowan Pottery (which closed in 1931). The piece has a full signature reading VIKTOR SCHRECKENGOST and is dated '34 (for 1934). The ceramic plate was designed to look wheel-thrown and is actually a rare prototype in itself, of a line that VS proposed to American Limoges and wanted to have called "Peasant Ware." Each Doulton Lambeth baluster-form vase has a rising neck with flared opening. The stoneware is glazed in gradations of mottled blues and browns with celadon upon the central section. Angled panels with raised beading separate rows of cobalt-glazed flower heads. Alternating heart-shape leaves and flower heads complete the Art Nouveau design. Impressed Doulton marks along with design number circa 1902-17. Artist mark for Louise Wakely as well as assistants marks. Dimensions: 10 1/2" H. each.
