Japanese Hakata ningyo, unglazed clay doll of a young samurai (wakashu) with a dancing fan. This doll may have been modeled after a character in Kabuki (played by all males) or Takarazuka (played by all females). There were many play houses in Hakata during the late Meiji, Taisho and early Showa period. The Takarazuka theater (Fukuoka Takarazuka?) was also there. This is a nice 20th century metal toy samurai sword that would be presented to a boy on Boys Day traditionally held on March 3rd. The sword was intended to imbue in the boy a sense of honor and strength as shown by the samurai of old. This miniature sword is made of metal and is intricately made with simulated sharks skin handle, a tiny sword guard (tsuba) and a decorated scabbard with a relief dragon going down the side. This rare pair of antique Japanese Samurai stirrups date to the mid Edo Period. The are inlaid with bits of abalone shell. The cut-out below the buckle appears to be the a representation of the trifold Asarum leaves, which was the mon of the Tokugawa shoguns.

There is some loss of abalone shell and there is a crack in one of the foot pads. But they are a gorgeous example even with these condition issues.
