This fine looking okimono of a pair of silvered bronze quail foraging among leafy, bronze sprigs of millet represents a subject beloved both to the Chinese and to the Japanese. A large bronze sculpture of a carp by Ota Ryohei enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating circa 1980. It is roughly 60 x 17 x 17 cm ‘2 feet long, 7-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches) and is in fine condition.
Ota Ryohei was born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1913. He studied under Miki Soshuku from 1931, and was first awarded at the 1934 Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai Exhibition. In 1935 he was first accepted into the Teiten, and ...click for details

An exquisite patinated bronze kogo of circular form worked in high relief with gold, copper and silver, the interiors of polished silver. A small shibuichi and gilt bird with upturned head perches on the leafy bough of a plum tree, lush peonies nearby. Flower petals in gilt and bronze are sprinkled along the sides. A charming silver incense burner of archaic design with handles and dome-like lid. Reminiscent of Chinese ritual- bronze vessels in form, its cockerel finial anticipates the scene depicted further on the censer's lightly- hammered body. A fairly large, finely hammered silver kettle (ginbin) with a squat, rounded corpus and a broad handle. Finely shaped lid w. a robust knob. Signed with maker’s seal in the bottom: Teppei. An attractive piece for the tea connaisseur. In fully signed kiri box (Signed: Seitetsudo Teppei). Early 20th cent., late Meiji–early Taisho. H 17.5 cm (w. handle), D 12 cm. Weight: 330g. This is a pair of exquisitely crafted fuchi kashira worked in partly hammered copper, gilt and shakudo. On its small surfaces, the set shows members of The Seven Gods of Fortune finely executed in low relief. On the fuchi, Daikoku, with his characteristic mirthful expression holds a mallet executed in finely incised details and low relief. This is a brilliant silver, shakudo and gilt rectangular box on four free-form feet. On its shakudo lid two geese stand among gilt bamboo while a third preens itself closeby. Worked in silver and gilt on a rich shakudo ground, the scene is executed in takazogan (high relief) with fine incised details. A finely hammered silver, tea strainer decorated on the edges with a dragon chasing the pearl. A pair of silver marks on the underside of the rim. Makers’ mark, not too clear, but looks like SF Sing Fat, Canton. L 17 cm., H 2.5 cm. 78 g. Late 19th cent. Condition: Fine with a few minor dents to the underside.
