Located at the foot of an active volcano, the Ougaku kiln specializes in Sakurajima yaki—a type of Satsuma-ware. The kiln is headed by Hashino Midori and run entirely by female potters who strive to infuse each piece they produce with the “energy” of the surrounding environment. Pieces such as the one featured here are made from volcanic ash and mineral-rich onsen spring water giving them a unique luster that is difficult to reproduce. This is a very nice quality miniature example of Yabu Meizan, exhibiting almost gem-like qualities. The front panel has a motif of children playing games and receiving lessons, while the reverse panel depicts the serenity of a simple iris plant. The balance of the vase is full decorated with profuse floral designs in gilt and enamel. The underside bears the seal of Yabu Meizan. The condition is excellent with no wear or restoration and it measures 3.4" x 1.4". It dates about 1900 - 191 ...click for details

The mottled pink ground color on this Kinkozan vase is one of the more unusual colors we have seen used. The gilt on the elegantly intertwined dragons is beautifully applied and is entirely intact, with no wear visible. Other than some very minor wear on the lip, the condition is excellent. The dimensions are 5.9" x 2.2" and it dates about 1900 - 1910.

This is a beautiful Japanese Satsuma Teapot. The pot is quite large standing 9 1/2 inches tall. The condition of the decorations is excellent. The lid was repaired but most that look over this piece for this flaw would not be able to tell. It is signed on the underside Kinkozan.

Subtle shading, gilt detailing and color add to the superior quality of this piece.
