Each measuring 7" in diameter, and signed on the back "Kizan", these plates are delicately painted in overglaze enamels with gilding over the flowers and floral elements and around the rim. One dish features chrysanthemum blossoms, along with other floral elements, and green foliage. The other has a variety of purple flowers, and the larger flowers appear to be red trumpets. A very interesting koro (incense burner) made in the Satsuma style of ceramics and dating from the Meiji period (1868-1912).

The koro is decorated in relief enamels, with the usual gold highlights and sublimely hand-painted details depicting six saints, a girl and two dragons.

This is a highly detailed Japanese Satsuma vase from the great Meiji artist Shizan. Look close at the images because the fine detail is as good as most of the finer pieces and easily looked over. The vase stands 4 3/4 inches tall. The vase is in excellent condition.

This amazing painted Satsuma chalice bowl is attributed to Yabu Meizan, because it is typical of the very superior works of art that came out of his workshop in Japan from 1880 to 1920. A spectacular Naeshirogawa Mimitsuku Tsubo dating from the Edo period, the rich red clay covered in thick splatters of dark glaze. The tsubo has been built up with coils of clay, and smoothed with a slightly textured paddle. The olive glaze has then been applied over a resistant surface preparation, causing it to peel back creating the unusual affect. This is a shell shaped serving dish from the Usunokochi-yaki Kilns of Southern Kyushu dating from the Edo period used as a serving dish on pleasure boats which plied the seas and rivers of Kagoshima, the ancient seat of government for the Satsuma fief. The theme of shellfish likely reflects what it held, with a large tray for fish, and smaller trays for side dishes, pickles or soy sauce.
