An interesting squat Japanese bronze koro with loop handles and three shallow feet, the style copying an “austere” seventeenth century Ming censer. Archaistic four-character Xuande mark to the foot and signed with a cursive three-character maker’s mark. Width: 5 ¼ in; height: 2 ½ in. Meiji (1868-1912).Mottled patina; the censer may have had a lid, though of course the original Chinese model would not. No damage.

The second volume is entirely composed of similar illustration ...click for details

A cylindrical iron ikebana vase with gilt decoration of ho-o birds and flowers, with a dragon border to the rim. Height: 9 ¾ in. 19th cent. The gilded parts of the design were probably complemented with silver foil in some other areas. This seems to have been lost over the years, though they still stand out in a contrasting colour from the ground. No other faults.
