An interesting Satsuma pottery dish decorated in enamels and gilt with a scene of horse racing and spectators in lavish costumes, the reverse marked Nihon tei beneath a Shimazu mon. Diameter: 21.2 cm. Taisho, c. 1920. Perfect condition; finely gilded. The scene depicted is probably the kurabe-uma-e-jinji,a ritual horse race held in Kyoto annually on the 5th May. |
