A Burmese pottery pipe with a silver stem, the unglazed bowl carved with a stylised bird motif, the stem incised with a dragon. Length: 37 cm. Late 19th/early 20th cent. No damage. Such pipes are a speciality of the village of Sayo-hpo near Mandalay, where they have been made since the seventeenth century. Designs are illustrated in Fraser-Lu: Burmese Crafts: Past and Present (p. 205), including one very similar to the current example. |
