An attractive Mindanao silver-inlaid betel box with chamfered corners, decorated with a geometric floral design. Dimensions: 6 1/8 in. x 3 in.x 3 in. 19th cent. The drop handles on the side are missing. No other faults. A very similar box in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum is illustrated in Boxes by William Ketchum Jr. (Smithsonian Institution, 1982), who notes that the boxes are made by the Moro people of the islands bordering the Sulu Sea. |
