A pair of Japanese books on the art of ikebana in a fitted paulownia wood box, the box inscribed and sealed. The leaf decoration on the covers of both books appears to have been impressed from plants, the textures of the veins and stems standing out in low-relief. The first book begins with five facsimile pages of text printed in a very cursive script and is then followed by thirty-eight pages of illustrated designs and descriptions. The second volume is entirely composed of similar illustrations. This has the look to me of being a text that should be well-known to aficionados, possibly on arrangements suitable for the tea ceremony. It is accompanied by a note indicating that the lady who owned it studied ikebana in Japan in the Thirties, together with a photo of her teacher and his family. A very interesting item which, thanks to the box, has been preserved in excellent condition. |
